Wilmette Police Buckle Down on Seat Belts

Wilmette Police will be hitting the road this Memorial Day weekend to enforce seat belts as part of the Click It or Ticket campaign.

Wilmette Police will be patroling the roads this Memorial Day weekend to make sure that drivers are wearing their seat belts at all times as part of the Click It or Ticket campaign.

Seat belt use in Illinois was reportedly at a record high in 2012 at 93.6 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).  NHTSA statistics show that nationwide, 21,253 people were killed in car accidents in 2011 and 52% of those people were not wearing their seatbelts.

"Over the years, the Click It or Ticket campaign has saved thousands of lives with the help of law enforcement officers, highway safety officials and safety advocates across the country," a press release from the Wilmette Police Department stated. "Still, an increase in awareness is needed to continuously and positively impact motorist behavior."
