Police Investigate Suspicious Incident Near Library

A 10-year-old boy told his mother that a woman approached him outside the library and offered him a ride.

Wilmette police are investigating a report of a suspicious incident that occurred Saturday near the Wilmette Public Library.

The mother of a 10-year-old boy reported that her son was approached outside the library by a woman in a car who offered him a ride, police said. There is no sign of criminal activity as of Monday evening, but police are continuing to investigate.

An email from the child's mother, which was forwarded to Patch as well as to others in the community, said there was another child in the backseat of the car who was blindfolded. Cmdr. Patrick Collins said the boy only saw the silhouette of another child in the car.

Below is the note that Police Chief Brian King sent to school administrators:

On Saturday the parent of a ten year old boy reported to the Wilmette Police Department that as  their son was using a pay phone outside of the Wilmette Public Library, a middle aged woman in a  vehicle called out to him and asked if he needed a ride home.   The woman had another child in the car with her at the time.  The child returned home and reported this to his mother who in turn reported it to the police.

At this point there is no evidence of criminal activity but the School Resource Officer is continuing to look into the report.

"There is no sign of criminal activity as of Monday evening" except for attempted Kidnapping. If kidnapping a 10 year old is not a sign of "criminal activity" then what is?

So anyone can drive around handing out free candy until they find a kid willing to hop in a car? Attempting to lure a child into a stranger's car by false pretense isn't just suspicious, it's criminal.
