Rapoport Pleads Guilty to Christmas Day Murder

He receives 30 years for killing his aunt last year.

Anthony Rapoport pleaded guilty Wednesday morning to last year’s . He was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

"I plead guilty," said Rapoport, in one of his few public statements on Wednesday in Room 207 of the Cook County Circuit Courthouse in Skokie.

Rapoport, who was 24 at the time of the murder, had an extensive history of mental health problems, including schizophrenia, his lawyer, Jim Mullenix, an assistant public defender, told the court. However, Rapoport was seen by a neuropsychologist from Northwestern University who deemed him fit to stand trial.

Rapoport’s grandfather, Hershel Rapoport, that he came downstairs in the family’s home on Hill Lane in west Wilmette after hearing an argument and saw Anthony bludgeon Nancee with a baseball bat. Anthony had been raised by his grandparents in that home, authorities said.

had been called to the residence earlier on Christmas Day regarding an argument between Anthony and Nancee, who accused her nephew of taking her cell phone.

In court Wednesday, Rapoport appeared lucid and calm. He was able to answer Judge Timothy Chambers’ questions. He wore a beige prisoner jumpsuit, was wearing his hair in a ponytail and had a beard near his chinline.

Assistant State's Attorney Mary Morris led the prosecution. The minimum sentence would have been 20 years, and the maximum would have been 60 years.
