Wilmette Blotter: $36,000 Lost in Home, Account Theft Cases

The following incidents were reported between June 27 and July 3, according to Wilmette police.

THEFT
A Wilmette resident's bicycle was stolen from Langdon Park, 1400 Sheridan Rd., between 5 p.m. and 5:50 p.m. July 2. According to the owner, it is a black Sedona mountain bike with a light on the front.

An envelope containing $2,500 was taken from a home in the 700 block of 11th Street between June 7 and June 11. The money belonged to the homeowner's son, who had left the money in the ceiling tiles of a room. The parents had hired a contractor to repair some damaged pipes and tiles in the room. The contractor said he noticed the envelope but could not say if it contained any money. He said the envelope was thrown out among the trash.

A bicycle was stolen from the Wilmette Metra station, 700 Green Bay Rd., between 9:55 a.m. and 7:20 p.m. on June 30.

A Nishki bike was taken from the Wilmette Metra station between 7 a.m. and 3:47 p.m. on June 27. Police reported that the bike has white lettering and red stripes.

A bicycle was taken from Centennial Park, 2300 Old Glenview Rd., on June 26 around 5 p.m. The bike was left unsecured, according to the police report.

A silver bracelet and diamond earrings were taken from a home in the 2600 block of Glenview Road between June 16 and June 19. The items were reported missing on June 27. They had been in the master bedroom and were last seen in a crystal dish atop a dresser.

Power tools were taken from the Wilmette Recreation Center, 3000 Glenview Rd., on May 9. The items, which belonged to the Park District, were reported missing on June 29. One of the missing items is a Dewalt power drill valued at $299 and the other is a Dewalt sabre drill valued at $199. A Park District employee first discovered the sabre drill was missing on June 1. He told authorities that he suspected the cleaning help might be responsible.

A fannie pack was taken from a home in the 100 block of Michigan Avenue between June 21 and June 22. The bag contained identification and credit cards.

IDENTITY THEFT
A Wilmette resident reported that her e-mail account was hacked between 10:30 a.m. and 3:43 p.m. July 1. The woman told authorities that a bogus e-mail was sent to her friends and family stating that she was robbed while in the Britain and needed $1,850. The woman also said all her contacts were deleted and her password was changed. No friends or family sent money to the overseas address.

Roughly $18,000 worth of fraudulent withdrawals were made from a Wilmette resident's Wells Fargo bank account between June 23 and June 25. Three $4,500 withdrawals occurred in Georgia and one $4,500 transaction occurred in Indiana, according to the police report. The resident reported the incidents on July 1 after a Wells Fargo notification.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

Door handles at a lifeguard station at Langdon Park were damaged between 7:30 p.m. July 1 and 8 a.m. July 2. The repair cost is estimated at $450. A lifeguard reported it appeared the locks had been stood on.

Two driveway lamp posts at a home in the 500 block of Skokie Boulevard were damaged between 8 p.m. July 2 and 6:30 a.m. July 3. The items are valued at $500.

Several CTA cars were vandalized at the transit authority's Linden station, 339 Linden Ave., between June 24 and June 27.

A rear passenger seat window was smashed while the car was parked in the 1200 block of Colgate Avenue at 11:30 a.m. June 28. The car owner is a housekeeper for a residence in the 2300 block of Thornwood Avenue and had parked her vehicle facing north on Colgate. The woman suspected a landscaping crew working at a nearby yard might have accidentally broken the window.

 

BATTERY
A female driver was apparently struck in the neck by a rock about 11:45 p.m. July 2 while crossing Seventh Street and Lake Avenue. Police said the victim had a visible welt on her neck. After driving away, the victim had a panic attack and was transported by paramedics to Evanston Hospital.

A woman in the 2500 block of Thornwood Avenue reported that her boyfriend had assaulted her on July 2 after the two had argued.


DOMESTIC TROUBLE
A couple in the 500 block of Ridge Road reported a verbal argument over chores about 10 p.m. June 27.

BURGLARY
A woman reported that rings valued at $8,000, two pairs of gold earrings valued at $1,000 and five gold chains valued at $15,000 were among numerous items stolen from her home in the 2400 block of Kenilworth Avenue between May 15 and June 28. The woman reported the incident on July 2.

The window of a home in the 2100 block of Lake Avenue had been pried open and $30 and a Playstation 3 video game console were stolen around 1:10 a.m. July 1. The resident became aware of the intruders when her dog chased them out of the home.

The storage room of the Wilmette Masonic Temple, 1000 Central Ave., was broken into between 6:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. June 29. No items were missing.

A car parked in the 1000 block of Miami Road was burglarized between June 26 and June 27. An iPod and gift cards were taken, while two Cubs tickets and golf clubs were left untouched.

A Toyota Rav 4 was broken into between 10:30 p.m. June 26 and 8:50 a.m. June 27 in the 1000 block of Miami Road. Binoculars and a cup holder were removed, but left on the passenger seat. No other items were taken.

A contractor working on a home in the 900 block of Forest Avenue reported an attempted burglary at the residence between June 23 and June 24. The man told police he had finished painting the porch and later returned to the residence to find footprints in the dried paint. He also discovered pry marks on the front windows of the residence, whose homeowners were on vacation.

 

BAD CUSTOMERS

A property owner told police that a tenant subleasing space in the 1200 block of Lake Avenue owed him $2,400 from a rental agreement since March 20. The incident was reported on June 20.

The owner of La Colona, 1515 Sheridan Rd., reported that a customer purchased two items worth $141.38 using a checking account that turned out to have insufficient funds. The purchases was made on May 28, and the merchant reported the incident on June 28 after two failed attempts at reaching the customer.

A man used two fraudulent checks to purchases watches at Wilmette Jewelers, 1149 Wilmette Avenue, between June 17 and June 20. The incident was reported on June 28. The checks were for $244.69 and $484.48. Wilmette police ran the man's name through the Illinois Secretary of State database and discovered two outstanding warrants from Lake County and another from Riverside for fraud.

 

ILLEGAL ITEMS
A 19-year-old Wilmette driver was given a ticket for having fake licenses and cannabis at 8:30 p.m. June 28 in the 200 block of Hibbard Road. The motorist had committed a traffic violation when he was stopped by police. Authorities later discovered the drugs and the fake identifications.

DUI
A 23-year-old Wilmette resident was arrested in the 2400 block of Lake Avenue at 1:15 a.m. June 23 and charged with driving under the influence. The man was stopped for disobeying a traffic signal and speeding. A breath test later revealed his blood alcohol content level was .206. He was also found in possession of cannabis.

A 25-year-old Glenview man was arrested in the 3900 block of Lake Avenue and charged with driving under the influence at 4:33 a.m. July 3.

OUTSTANDING WARRANT
On June 30, Chicago police notified Wilmette authorities that they had a 41-year-old Indiana man in custody. He had an outstanding warrant for theft from the village.
