Wilmette Blotter: Leak Leads to Home of Hit-Run Driver; Cabbie Charged With DUI

The following incidents were reported between May 2 and 9, according to Wilmette police.

DUI
A 35-year-old Chicago man crashed into a Wilmette resident's front yard in the 1100 block of Michigan Avenue around 6 a.m. May 2. The driver damaged the sprinkler system, lawn and a boulder. He was taken to Evanston hospital where he was later arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without a valid license, driving without proof of insurance, driving too fast for conditions and for diving without a seat belt.

A 41-year-old Glenview resident was arrested at her home following a hit-and-run accident at the intersection Skokie Boulevard and Glenview Road around 10 p.m. May 2. The woman had been traveling westbound on Glenview Road when she disobeyed a red light and hit a couple in a vehicle heading south on Skokie Boulevard. The second car was pushed into a grassy area and struck a small tree. Its occupants were not injured, according to police. An officer who responded to the scene followed a trail of fluids that had been leaking from the Glenview driver's car to her home. The woman was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of an accident.

A 27-year-old Elmwood Park resident was arrested in the 700 block of Lawler Avenue at 6:57 p.m. on May 6 on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol. A breath test revealed that the man had a blood alcohol content of .344. The driver, who operated a 303 Taxi cab, was unable to perform a field sobriety test and had an open container of alcohol.

THEFT
A taupe colored Fuji 12-speed bicycle was stolen from a storage room in a building in the 400 block of Linden Avenue between April 29 and May 2.

More than $11,800 in jewelry was reported stolen from a woman in the 2700 block of Glenview Road on May 2. The 78-year-old resident provided police with a list of items that went missing between Jan. 1 and May 1: a 14-carat yellow-gold diamond pear-shaped pendant valued at $9,962, a 14-carat yellow-gold King David pendants with a 14-carat yellow-gold chain valued at $930 and a 14-carat yellow-gold 24-inch necklace valued at $930.

A red and white Schwinn bicycle was taken from St. Francis Xavier School, 808 Linden Ave., on May 4.

A green Schwinn Pro BMX bicycle was taken from St. Francis Xavier School on May 5. The owner said he had locked up his bike, which was valued at $200.

An employee at the Wilmette Recreation Center, 3000 Glenview Rd., reported at 2:59 p.m. May 7 that his paycheck was stolen. The man said he had placed the check on a punching bag and put a purple cone on top that day in a storage room. The punching bag was later moved by an employee and a volunteer who was performing community service work. The check was found missing around 1 p.m.

 Two dark gray faux concrete planters were stolen between May 7 and 9 from Alexis Antiques at 406 Ridge Rd.

A Wilmette resident in the 300 block of Ridge Road reported that a custom-made computer, a Canon printer, a portable hard drive and a $50 gift certificate to a hardware store in Palatine were stolen from her home on May 6 around 3 p.m. The items were reported missing on May 9.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

The Wilmette Metra station, 1200 Wilmette Ave., was vandalized with graffiti between April 28 and May 5. An employee reported that black ink was put on the west exterior wall in two locations, along with some gold ink on the south wall of the station. Also a west side window frame had been scratched.

RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY
Roughly $6,000 in jewelry and two $75 Tiffany gift cards were taken from a home in the 1000 block of Greenwood Avenue around 9 p.m. May 9. A window was smashed and a second window pane had been forced open to gain entry to the unoccupied home. Police recovered two emptied jewelry boxes that belonged to the homeowners nearby in the 700 and 900 blocks of Greenwood Avenue. Authorities also found a wallet that contained two passports that belonged to the residents.
