Wilmette Blotter: Mover Nabbed in iPad Theft; Malinkrodt Park Vandalism

The following incidents occurred from June 16-22, according to Wilmette police

AUTO BURGLARY
About $2 in quarters, a Leatherman multitool kit, a T-shirt and water bottle were taken from an unlocked car in the 100 block of Oakwood Avenue between 6 p.m. June 16 and 8 a.m. June 17.

A change purse containing at least $5 as well as two pairs of sunglasses were taken from an unlocked car in the 100 block of Gregory Avenue between 7 p.m. June 16 and 8:30 a.m. June 17.

A GPS device, granola bar and prescription glasses were taken from a car in the 1900 block of Highland Avenue between 8:30 p.m. June 16 and 8 a.m. June 17. The items were later recovered in an auto burglary incident that occurred on June 16 in the 2700 block of Lawndale Street.

DUI
A 21-year-old Wheeling resident was stopped in the 1700 block of Lake Avenue at 4:09 a.m. June 17 for traffic violations. A breath test revealed she had a blood alcohol content level of .186, and police filed charges against her.

A 36-year-old Northfield resident was charged with driving under the influence and speeding after police stopped the driver for traffic violations in the 4000 block of Lake Avenue at 2:42 a.m. June 19.

A Wilmette resident was stopped in the 2900 block of Lake Avenue for traffic offenses on June 22. The driver was charged with driving under the influence after he failed a sobriety test. A breath test later revealed his blood alcohol content level was .206. 

THEFT
A Russian couple from Lincolnwood are accused of taking a Whirlpool washer and dryer, valued at $800, without paying for them during an estate sale in the 3000 block of Hill Lane on June 17. The vendor said he had forgotten to charge the couple, who assisted in loading the items into their white paneled van.

A silver bicycle was taken between 4 p.m. and 8:47 p.m. June 17 from the Linden CTA station.

A bike was taken from the Linden CTA station between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. June 18. The owner's cable was found cut.

A mountain bike was taken from the Wilmette Public Library between 1 p.m.  and 1:20 p.m. June 19.

A 25-year-old Lindenhurst man admitted to taking an iPad from a Wilmette resident while helping her move from the 600 block of Maple Avenue to Evanston on June 22. The resident noticed the item was missing, and alerted the supervisor who then checked all the cars for the device. It was discovered that one of the employees had taken the iPad tablet computer and hidden it under his sweatshirt. The light-fingered worker was arrested and charged with misdemeanor theft.

A silver woman's bike was stolen from an alley in the 2000 block of Birchwood Avenue on June 21.

At least 12 spreader bars were taken from Kerrigan Plumbing in the 3600 block of Lake Avenue on June 21. Surveillance cameras caught suspicious incidents, including a van pulling into a grassy area where the bars were laying and but then its headlights obscured the cameras. As police reviewed other tapes, they saw a man wearing a white shirt and pants bicycling through the yard.

A woman's Coach purse was stolen from Gillson Beach on June 20. The woman told police she had left the purse near the pier and came back to find it missing. It contained $3, a debit card, a Blackberry cell phone and a friend's iPhone.

A Bad Boy Cannondale bicycle, valued at $1,718, was taken from the Wilmette Metra station between 6:30 a.m. and 7:10 p.m. June 21.

FRAUD
A Wilmette resident in the 400 block of Brookside Drive reported that fraudulent purchases were charged to his Visa card between March 17 and June 17. Both purchases were made in New York: one for $168.27 and the other for $201.95.

ARREST
A 55-year-old Chicago man was arrested in the 1100 block of Wilmette Avenue at 8:14 a.m. June 18 and charged with driving on a suspended license, speeding 11-14 mph above the posted limit and driving without insurance.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
A fire hydrant was knocked over and its top was broken off in the 80 block of 16th Street between midnight and 9:54 a.m. June 18.

Two benches in Malinkrodt Park, 1041 Ridge Rd., were vandalized with graffiti on June 18. A Park District worker reported the incident. She told police that she had been gardening and stepped away for 20 minutes. When she returned, the benches were marked with black paint.

A neighbor agreed to pay for a damaged window at a home in the 800 block of Leamington Avenue that was shot with a BB pellet between May 2 and June 20. The resident's son noticed a small hole in the window and said it had occurred after he replaced the screen in early May. Police later discovered that a neighbor's son had accidentally shot the window. His mother agreed to have him pay for the damage.

ATTEMPTED HOME BURGLARY
An attempt was made to pry open a porch door at a home in the 1000 block of Ridge Road between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. June 20. No items were reported stolen, but the door jam and hook lock were damaged.
