Wilmette Blotter: Woman Loses $4,500 to Scam

Burglary

An employee at Central School reported that her laptop was stolen from the desk drawer in her locked office between 2:45 p.m. Feb. 24 and 9 a.m. Feb. 27.

Retail theft

Peter Drake, 52, of Mt. Prospect was arrested for retail theft at 1:08 p.m. Feb. 22 at Carson Pirie Scott after he bought a pair of pink slippers then allegedly attempted to leave the store without paying for $300 worth of merchandise including two pairs of men's underwear, a bottle of perfume and a sport coat. According to police, Drake said he was getting items for his girlfriend.

DUI

Jennifer M. Schipitsch, 35, of Glenview was arrested for DUI at 7:43 p.m. Feb. 23 at the intersection of Winnetka and Hibbard roads in Northfield. A mostly empty bottle of chardonnay was found behind the driver's seat. She was also charged with driving in the wrong lane, making an improper turn and illegal transportation of alcohol.

Fraud

A series of 11 fraudulent purchases totaling $772 were made on a lost debit card belonging to a resident of the 1600 block of Greenwood Avenue on Jan. 9.

A resident of the 400 block of Beverly Drive responded to an online mystery shopper scam. Between Feb. 8 and 17 she deposited two sets of fraudulent money orders totaling $4,500 and sent money from her account to a third party in the Philippines.

A stolen credit card belonging to a resident of the 1500 block of Sheridan Road was used to make $961 in fraudulent purchases between Feb. 12 and 14.

Identity theft

A person in Pennsylvania used the Social Security number of a resident of the 800 block of Lake Avenue to fraudulently fill out three 1099 tax forms.
