Wilmette Police Blotter: Backpack Theft, Fraud

Theft

A man reported May 4 that he accidentally left his backpack near the tracks while boarding a train at the Metra Station, 722 Green Bay Rd. He learned that his cell phone that was left in the backpack had been used. He contacted the person who had the backpack, and the woman promised to return it. But the woman has since stopped answering the man’s calls. The backpack contained $300 in cash, an iPhone, a wallet with credit cards and identifications.

A resident in the 2300 block of Birchwood Ave., reported May 7 that his personal information was used to open an unauthorized account at a bank in Buffalo Grove.

Fraud

Residents in the 400 block of Cove Lane reported receiving a call from a man representing himself as their teenage grandson. The man told the resident that he had got into a ca accident in Chicago with a Spanish diplomat and that he needed cash sent to Spain for bond. The couple’s bank alerted them that this was a scam and no money was sent to Spain.
