Wilmette Police Blotter: Marinara Matching Victim's Name Thrown Through Car Windshield

Criminal Damage

Someone smashed the windshield and passenger side window of a car and poured marinara sauce in the vehicle while it was parked in the 2500 block of Elmwood Avenue between midnight and 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 26. The owner of the vehicle reportedly told police that she suspected a jealous ex-boyfriend may be responsible for the damage. The responding officer reported seeing a large rock on the floor of the car and a broken glass jar of tomato sauce in the backseat. The victim told police she thought the offender had chosen to use a specific brand of tomato sauce that resembled her middle name. Nothing was reported stolen from the vehicle.

Retail Theft

A man in his late 20s reportedly stole a $41 cordless shaver and two “electric flossers” worth $65 from a store located in the 800 block of Green Bay Road at approximately 10:26 a.m. on Oct. 24. A store employee told police that she witnessed the man leave the store with a basket of items, get into an awaiting vehicle and tell the driver, “let’s go, let’s go.” The employee later confirmed with the cashier that the man had not paid for the products. The man was described as wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, jeans and white sneakers. Though the employee said she saw the license plate of the vehicle, she could not remember several plate numbers.

Residential Burglary

A Wilmette woman reportedly told police that she witnessed a man attempt to break into the basement window of her home, located in the 2000 block of Central Avenue, at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 25. According to the report, as the woman pulled her car into the driveway of her home, she saw a man trying to force open a basement window with only his hands. When the man saw the woman, he stood up, ran north up her driveway and disappeared behind her garage. The woman called her husband, who was in the home, to come out and escort her from the car. Her husband reported seeing or hearing nothing unusual while he was home. The offender was described as a tall man wearing a hood and dark clothing, and as “very fast”

Telephone Harassment

A 15-year-old Wilmette girl and her stepfather reported that the teen had received a threatening voicemail message from an unknown male at 7:56 p.m. on Oct. 20. The teen told police she thought the message may have come from an acquaintance of her former friend.

Theft

A spare tire, a winch and a locking mechanism valued at a combined $800 were reported stolen from a vehicle belonging to a Wilmette resident sometime between noon on Oct. 12 and 9 a.m. on Oct. 20. The victim said she did not know when the items had been stolen and could have been taken while the vehicle was parked in Chicago.
