Wilmette Police Blotter: Over $10k in Department Store 'Under-Ringing'

Michael P. Sholer, 46, of 1637 W. Fargo Ave., Chicago, was charged with retail theft after he reportedly “under-rang” merchandise on 23 separate occasions as a Carson Pirie Scott employee, causing a loss of $10,932.24. Under-ringing is the act of a cashier illegally charging less for an item than the listed price. According to the report, a store loss prevention officer called Wilmette police to the store, located in the 3200 block of Lake Avenue, at 3:31 p.m. on Sept. 21 and informed police officers that Sholer had been under-ringing merchandize since April. The loss prevention officer reportedly provided police with copies of transactions, said to have been completed by Sholer, which showed evidence of the under-ringing. Police were also shown video of some of Sholer’s transactions. After police entered a room where Sholer was sitting, police said Sholer voluntarily said, “Yeah, I’ve been doing some under-ringing.” No court date was listed on the case narrative.

An unknown offender spray painted a blue letter “V” over a 25 mile-per-hour speed-limit sign posted in the 2700 block of Birchwood Avenue sometime before 12:48 p.m. on Sept. 23.
An unknown offender spray painted a speed-limit sign located in the 1200 block of Wilmette Avenue, using blue spray paint to make the sign read “80” instead of “30” sometime before 12:55 p.m. on Sept. 23.
Truck Enforcement
Joel Gonzalez, 40, of 5014 N. Monticello Ave., Chicago, was charged with driving on a suspended license and driving an unsafe vehicle after police pulled him over at 9:10 a.m. on Sept. 21 under suspicion that he was driving an overweight truck. According to the report, police observed Gonzalez driving a pick-up truck with a “large load and low bulging tires”. Police brought the truck to the Northfield Public Works, where it was weighed at 11,680 pounds, which was 3,680 over the allowed registration limit.
Theft
A black, seven-gear bicycle valued at $600 was reportedly stolen from the Metra train station, 722 Green Bay Rd., sometime between 9 a.m. on Aug. 2 and 9 a.m. on Sept. 2.
