Wilmette Police Botter: Tool Theft, Home Burglary, Fraud, Spray Paint at Highcrest

Home Burglary

A home in the 700 block of 8th Street was burglarized on July 13. The offenders stole numerous lap top computers, iPads, iPhone, jewelry and U.S. currency and foreign coins worth a total of $4,500. Police say they later arrested an Evanston teen in connection with the burglary. Police are still searching for the second offender, who was described as African American male in his late teens.

Recovered Property

A resident in the 600 block of 6th Street reported finding two bikes leaning against her house behind some bushes on July 15. Police say the bikes are probably related to a July 13 burglary in the 700 block of 8th Street.

Tools Stolen from Construction Site

Tools worth $1,440 were stolen from Walgreens construction site at 3232 Lake Ave., sometime between July 11 and 12.  The worker on the site told police that this is the second time theft has occurred at the site. The first incident happened about a month ago when a steel book cart was stolen. 

Fraud

A resident in the 1900 block of Lake Avenue reported a former handyman stole her checks and ATM card and cashed several checks. The loss was estimated at between $10,000 and $15,000. 

An employee of the Jewel Osco, 411 Green Bay Rd., reported that someone used her bankcard to withdraw $1,080 on five separate transactions between May 17 and June 11.  She told police the card is typically left in her locked locker while at work. 

Burglary to Auto

A GPS and a black bag were stolen from an unlocked car in the 1300 block of Wilmette Avenue on July 10. No loss estimate was provided.

Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol

Alexander R. Rutstein, 22, of 915 Locust Rd., Wilmette, was arrested July 15 for driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop in the 900 block of Locust Rd. 

Daniel P. Elsbree, 46, of 3005 Washington Ave., Wilmette, was arrested July 15 for driving under the influence of alcohol after officers observed a vehicle sitting at the ATM lane in Westlake Plaza, 3245 Lake Ave., for an extended period of time. 

Spray Paint at Highcrest School

Spray paint was found at Highcrest School, 569 Hunter Rd. No time frame was available for when the incident occurred, police said.
