Wilmette Police Issue Residential Burglary Alert

A couple of local thefts from last week and neighboring burglaries have prompted the notice.

Police have issued an alert following a couple of residential burglaries that occurred in Wilmette last week.

A residential burglary occurred in the 900 block of Sheridan Road between 4:30 p.m. on March 4 and 12 a.m. on March 5. Unknown offender(s) may have entered an unlocked garage door and an unlocked inner garage door to the house. Jewelry was taken from the master bedroom.

Offenders stole jewelry from a residence in the 300 block of Central Avenue between 2:30 p.m. on March 4 and 1:52 p.m. on March 5. Police were alerted by a postal worker who had discovered the front door of the residence was forced open.  A neighbor reported told authorities he or she had heard banging between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m.

Police have issued the below statement in light of recent burglaries in Wilmette and neighboring municipalities.

 The Wilmette Police Department recommends taking the following preventive measures:

  • Lock up your homes when you are away and at home.
  • Activate your alarm, if applicable.
  • Ensure you have exterior and interior lighting on during the evening hours.
  • Immediately call 911 for suspicious vehicles, persons and noise.
  • Stop mail and newspaper delivery if your are going to be away on vacation.
  • Tell your friends or neighbors of your absence and ask them to check on your home.
