Wilmette Resident Falls Victim to Craigslist Scam

The following arrest information was provided by the Wilmette Police Department. When an arrest is mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Fraud

A resident on the 1040 block of Ridge Rd. reported unauthorized charges to her credit card on May 21, according to police reports.

A resident on the 700 block of Greenleaf Ave. reported that an unknown offender entered the backyard and removed an unsecured bike on May 23 between 6:10 and 7:30 p.m., according to Wilmette Police reports.

A Chicago yellow cab reported that an unknown man exited the vehicle at 2211 Lake and never returned to pay the fare, Wilmette Police reports state. The cab was equipped with surveillance equipment and they will download the photo for the report. The incident occurred on May 24 on the 2200 block of Lake.

Arrest

Mark T. Hahn, 49, of Wilmette is being charged with a DUI after being pulled over in the 1900 block of Wilmette Ave. for minor traffic violations, police reports state. Hahn failed field sobriety tests and was taken into custody for DUI. He refused the breath test. The driver was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia.

Fraud

A resident on the 1100 block of Michigan reported two unauthorized charges to her credit card during the past month, police reports state.

Domestic Battery

Janet Trierweiller, 52, of Evanston is being charged with domestic battery, according to Wilmette Police reports. Trierweiller is the ex-girlfriend of a homeowner on the 1500 block of 15th St. Police reports state that she came to the house and battered him on May 22. 

Identity Theft

An elderly resident on the 500 block of Ridge reported on May 20 that an unknown subject called her on the phone stating that her computer was sending error messages and had a virus, police reports state. He convinced her to let him get access to her computer so that he could fix it. During the supposed repair she became suspicious and shut her computer off which angered the subject on the phone. She is reporting the incident because she is not sure if the subject had gotten any of her personal information.

Theft

The owner of F. J. Kerrigan Plumbing reported a theft of items from his open supply yard between May 18 and 19 and 3620 Lake St, police reports state. Numerous pieces of metal pipe and a large aluminum trench box were taken over a two day period. 

Theft

An 82-year-old resident on the 1100 block of Wilmette Ave. reported, with the help of her son, that checks have been written on her account that she did not authorize or make, police reports state. There have also been withdrawals from her account using her debit card which were not authorized. They believe the offender is possibly the care giver for her because some of the payments have taken care of her bills.

Fraud

A resident on the 2400 block of Meadow Dr. North reported that he had posted a Craigslist ad to rent an apartment in Chicago. He received a response to his ad and the person responding said that he would rent his Chicago apartment. The Wilmette resident sent the subject his rent and security deposit and later discovered that the real owner of the apartment was not renting his apartment. He has been in contact with both banks involved and was advised to file a police report.
