Chime in: Should Backyard Chickens be Legalized in Wilmette?

One of our top stories this week was junior Zan Fisher's quest to legalize backyard chickens in Wilmette.

Several Patch readers praised Fisher for her efforts while others were concerned backyard chickens would smell and attract coyotes or racoons.

Phil Hoza wrote on Winnetka-Glencoe Patch:

"We had chickens in our backyard in Wilmette (Washington and 17th Street) when I was young (1950's). It was great to wake up with them crowing at 5am in the morning."

joeei benedict wrote on Wilmette-Kenilworth Patch:

"This is not a farm community and I'd hate to wake up to the sounds of a chicken being eaten by a racoon."

As of May 4, more than 82 percent of Patch readers said backyard chickens should be legalized in Wilmette.
