Preckwinkle, Canning Discuss Cooperation and Common Issues

Wilmette President Chris Canning and Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle met Friday at Village Hall.

Wilmette President Chris Canning discussed budget issues, intergovernmental relationships and county services with Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle Friday, according to a statement released Monday.

The meeting, held at Wilmette's Village Hall, "occurred as part of County Board President Preckwinkle’s ongoing efforts to reach out to suburban Cook County mayors and suburban councils of government," according to the release.

Preckwinkle's visit was a welcome sign of change for Canning.

"To my knowledge, this is the first time the Cook County Board President has offered to come and speak to a Wilmette Village President to discuss the County’s relationship with the Village," Canning said in the statement, ". . . it shows President Preckwinkle’s commitment to improving the working relationship between the County and municipalities.”

The duo talked about County-Village cooperation regarding sales tax decisions, as well as criminal justice and public health services.

"I look forward to partnering with President Canning on important issues like economic development and the sales tax rollback in the near future," Preckwinkle also said in the release.
