Update: Bess Takes Third in State Meet

Warrior 220 pounder gets medal with 3-1 decision.

(Update at 7:50 p.m. Saturday) Artie Bess grabbed the third place medal at the State Wrestling Meet tonight with a 3-1 decision over David Denne of Mt. Carmel.

(Update at 3 p.m. Saturday) Artie Bess defeated Quinton Quarles of Grant in overtime, 2-1, today in the consolation semifinals of the State Wrestling Meet to move into the third place match against David Denne of Mt. Carmel.

(Update at Noon Saturday) Artie Bess dropped his championship semifinal Friday night, 7-3, to Josh Marchok of Schaumburg in th3 220-pound weight class of the State Wrestling Meet in Champaign.

Bess will wrestle the Quinton Quarles of Grant this afternoon for the right to compete for the third place medal tonight.

Lenny Bloom dropped his consolation quarterfinal match this morning to Corbett Oughton of Minooka, 7-2. Bloom completes his four-year career for the Warriors with a 40-3 record for the season.

(Update at 3:30 p.m. Friday) Lenny Bloom defeated Nick McDonnell of Naperville North in his first match  in the 145-pound consolation round of the State Wrestling Tournament today to keep his hopes for a third place medal alive.

Bloom moves on to face Corbett Oughton of Minooka in the consolation semifinal Saturday. If he wins he competes for third place. A loss places him in the fifth place bout.

(Update at 12:40 p.m. Friday) Artie Bess (220) dominated Tow Howell of Chicago Marist, 5-1, a few minutes ago to win his quarterfinal match in the State Wrestling Meet to advance to the semifinals later today against Josh Marchok of Schaumburg.

After a scoreless first period, Bess took a 1-0 lead on a reversal to start the second period, had a takedown later in that frame for a 3-0 edge before putting the bout away in the third with a near fall.

Bess has won his two matches by a combined score of 17-1.

Lenny Bloom (145) will wrestle Nick McDonnell of Naperville North later today as well in his first consolation match as he seeks a third place medal.

(Update at 10:50 a.m. Friday) Lenny Bloom (145) dropped his quarterfinal match, 10-1, to Kevin Moylan of Stagg today in the State Wrestling Meet in Champaign.

Bloom wrestles later today in the consolation round for a chance at a third place medal.

(Earlier Friday) Lenny Bloom and Artie Bess won their opening round matches Thursday in the State Wrestling Tournament in Champaign to move into today’s quarterfinal round.

Bess dominated Greg Cameron of Plainfield Central, 12-0, and will wrestle Tom Howell of Chicago’s Marist today.

Bloom downed Steve Meyers of Plainfield North, 11-5, and moves on to face Kevin Moylan of Stagg today.

Bess held a 3-0 lead at the end of the first period, nearly pinned his foe in the second and cradled him twice more in the third for the 12-0 victory.
