Valerie Van Heest is the award-winning author of Lost on the LadyElgin, the story of the sidewheel steamer that sank off the North Shore coast in September, 1860, claiming more than 300 lives despite the valiant rescue efforts of people from Wilmette, Winnetka, and Evanston. It remains the
greatest open-water disaster in the history of the Great Lakes. Ms. Van Heest, a Wilmette native, will discuss how the tragedy unfolded, the rescue attempts, the re-discovery of the wreck in 1989, the legal battle that ensued, and her
own underwater excursions to document the vessel. Her book and dvd will be available for purchase. This event is free for members; $5 for non-Museum members.
