New Trier Alum Invites High School Teacher to Cornell Ceremony

New Trier class of 2009 graduate Marcella McGee Hayes was named a Merrill Scholar at Cornell University, Chicago Tribune reported.

When New Trier High School alum Marcella McGee “Sally” Hayes was named among the top one percent of the graduating class at Cornell University and told she could invite a person to a ceremony honoring influential teachers Hayes knew exactly who she’d invite—Elizabeth Plank, her history teacher, Chicago Tribune reported.  

Hayes, who earned degrees in history and Spanish, was among the 30 graduating Cornell students named Merrill Scholars, and remembered Plank as a history teacher with an infectious curiosity who encouraged students to look beyond historic events for patterns and to form opinions about why things happened in a certain way, Chicago Tribune reported.
