New Trier Receives Wind Turbine Grant

The development will take place at the Northfield Campus

New Trier's Northfield campus will get a little greener by the Fall thanks to a grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation. The high school will be using the funds to install a wind turbine for students to study wind energy more closely.

“New Trier appreciates the support of the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation in giving our science and math students and environmental clubs the chance to see how wind energy is harnessed and used,” said District 203 Superintendent Linda Yonke in a press release. “This type of first-hand data collection is an invaluable part of our curriculum.”

New Trier had announced in February that was applying for the grant, which will pay for $20,000 or 90 percent of the project. High school officials estimate the green initiative to cost $18,990.

In addition to the turbine system, the project will include an internet-based monitoring component that allows students to observe how wind produces electricity. Meanwhile, science faculty and students will document the installation process.

This grant comes on the heels of a 2009 ICECF award, which resulted in solar panels being built on the Winnetka Campus' roof.
