Regina Runners Gear Up for Nike Challenge

Seven Regina Dominican High School runners will compete in a special event before the Chicago Marathon Sunday.

's top seven runners will get a chance to represent the Northside Chicagoland area in a special Nike race Sunday.

Nike's Northside/Southside Challenge gives high school students a chance to compete "in the footsteps of their running heroes," during the Chicago Marathon. The invitational meet will take place when the official marathon starts, but within the final 2.62 miles of the course.

"We'll be training this week and getting the girls pumped up," said Assistant Coach Marguerite Maginot. "They're really excited to compete in the challenge—we're a great running team and this is an opportunity to show that."

This is Regina's first time competing in the race, which was started in 2009 by Bank of America and Nike. Representing the all-girl high school will be junior Erin Gavin, freshman Kate McDonough, senior Zoya Khan, junior Claire Bailey, senior Heather Bucher and junior Sara Martinez.

Runners have a chance to win "individual awards, team awards for Regina, and team awards as part of a greater Northside squad," according to school spokesperson Katie Hickey.
