Regina Track and Field Takes 3rd at Sectionals, Wins Three Sectional Titles, Sends Three to State

Four panthers head to the IHSA State Championship to compete in four different events.

The Regina Dominican Panther Track and Field team competed on Thursday 5/12 at the IHSA Class 2A Chicago (Jones) Sectional at Hanson Stadium in Chicago, Illinois. The team took 3rd place overall and scored 72 points. The Panthers captured three individual IHSA Sectional titles and will be sending three athletes to the IHSA State Championship to compete in four different events.

Heather Bucher '12 of Chicago captured her second consecutive IHSA Sectional title in the 300m Low Hurdles (51.01) and also advanced to State in the 100m High Hurdles (2nd place in 19.37). Bucher is the first girl in school history to advance to the state championship in the 100m high hurdles and the first to advance in consecutive years in any hurdle event. Also adding individual IHSA Sectional titles were Allie Shulski '12 of Northfield in the shot put (29’ 2") and Taylor Regulski '11 of Chicago in the discus (84’). Both Shulski and Regulski had career days as they
advanced to the IHSA State Championship in Charleston, IL. Shulski and Regulski are the first pair of Panther throwers to ever advance to the IHSA state meet together. Regulski advances to the state meet for the 2nd year in a row after finishing 2nd at the sectional meet last year. Shulski added a 3rd place in the discus and Regulski added a 3rd place in the shot as the duo combined to score 32 of the team’s 72 points.

Also scoring for the Panthers was Clare Flaherty '13 of Lincolnwood (4th place) in the high jump (4’4"). The 3200m relay team (3rd place) of Taylor Martinez '13 of Chicago, Aileen Campanaro '11 of Chicago, Zoya Khan '12 of Skokie and Erin Gavin '13 of Chicago (11:17), Sara Martinez '13 of Chicago in the 3200m run (6th), Maria Koutsostamatis '13 of Chicago in the 100m High Hurdles (5th) and high jump (6th), the 800m relay team of Julia Ehrenberg '13 of Lincolnwood, Erin Gavin, Clare Flaherty and Destini Dumas-Sykes '12 of Evanston (6th), Taylor Martinez in the 1600m run (4th place in 6:38.71), Destini Dumas-Sykes in the 200m dash (6th in
28.96) and the 1600m relay team of Clare Flaherty, Erin Gavin, Zoya Khan and Heather Bucher (5th place in 4:45.75.)

The Regina Dominican Panther Track and Field team closes out its 2011 season with Heather Bucher, Allie Shulski and Taylor Regulski competing at the IHSA Class 2A State Championship prelims on Friday May 20. The state championship is held on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois.
