Winnetka Tables Motion on New Trier's Request for Baseball Net System

Trustees asked New Trier High School officials to investigate other options.

Winnetka Trustees have tabled making a decision on New Trier High School’s request for a proposed 50-foot-tall baseball net system at Duke Childs Field, and have asked school officials to look into other options such as reconfiguring the site, moving across the street, more landscaping plan and community outreach, Chicago Tribune reported.

The school says the net will help to prevent baseballs from flying onto Willow Road. But some Winnetka residents raised concerns that the system could be an eyesore--the system extend a total of 160 feet in length, 100 feet of it is parallel to Willow Road and 60 feet of it is behind the home plate.

Greg Robitaille, a Winnetka resident and New Trier board member, says he’s surprised the plan has faced so much scrutiny from the village boards, prior to the July 16 meeting, New Trier officials have attended seven meetings total with recommending boards since January, “I find it a little hard to believe we’re having a debate about this because public safety should win out every time,” Robitaille was quoted saying in the newspaper. “We’re one foul ball away from a tragedy. The fact that it hasn’t happened so far to me is good fortune, not good policy.”
