Little Leaguers End Summer in Dramatic Fashion

Wilmette put three teams in the finals of the Lake Shore Feeder Baseball League playoffs.

If history is the best predictor of future results, New Trier and Loyola Academy have a lot to look forward to six or seven years down the road.

Wilmette’s 9A and 9B teams both made it to the championship games of the Lake Shore Feeder Baseball League playoffs this summer. In the 9A division, Wilmette while the 9B team came through with a victory over Glenview Blue, 6-3.

“We almost didn't make it out of the first round,” said Daniel Douaire, coach of Wilmette’s 9B team. “We had an extra-inning thriller against Kenilworth-Winnetka.

Down by three in the bottom of the sixth – the game’s last inning – Danny Pugliese and Thomas Schafer each hit home runs to tie the game and Wilmette scored three runs to tie the game. After holding Kenilworth-Winnetka scoreless in the top of the seventh, Isaiah Gagerman drove in the game-winning run with a single.

Wilmette’s 9A team beat Evanston and Northbrook on their way to the championship game against No. 1 ranked Deerfield. The team took a 6-5 lead into the last inning, but Deerfield scored two runs with a couple of big hits.

“Wilmette showed unbelievable resilience and that shows the kind of character this team had that enabled them to go 19-5 over the course of the season, including one tournament,” said Kyle Berceau, coach of Wilmette’s 9A team.

Wilmette’s team in the 10A division also advanced to the finals, losing 5-1 to Northbrook Green.
