Loyola Sports Roundup: Water Polo Teams Finish Season at State

Girls soccer captured a regional championship while several track athletes qualified for the state meet.

Girls Track: , sending seven qualifiers and four relay teams to the state meet. Unfortunately, the Illinois’ high school track championship is a whole new challenge.

No Loyola athletes managed to get beyond the preliminaries on Friday. In the 800, Jackie McDonnell (2:18.14) and Rachel Price (2:17.77) came the closest. Both placed seventh in their heats, but were less than two seconds from qualifying for the finals.

Stacey Weaver and Katie Simons both cleared 9-0 in the pole vault, but a mark of 10-6 was needed to advance.

In the relays, the 4x800 ran 9:34, placing fifth in its heat while the 4x100 ran 49.73 and placed sixth in the first heat of the preliminaries.

The 4x200 ran 1:43.92 to take seventh in the second preliminary heat and the 4x400 ran 4:04.31 for a sixth-place finish in its heat.

Boys Water Polo: last weekend, Loyola defeated McHenry, 13-11, in the state quarterfinals on Thursday. But the Ramblers’ run would end with a tough 10-9 loss to St. Ignatius in the semi-finals. Loyola rebounded to take third place by defeating Sandburg, 9-5.

Boys Track: last week. Juniors Todd Ford (1600) and Will Hague (3200) both finished fourth, but moved on with a time under the state qualifying mark.

Senior Jeff Toraason won the high jump title with a mark of 6-05.

Girls Soccer: Starting the quest for a state title, Loyola (22-0-3) won the Wilmette Regional with an 11-0 win against Mather and a 3-0 victory over Maine West. Annie Manganaro scored 3 goals and Lane Harmer added 2 goals for Loyola in the win against Mather.

Loyola plays Evanston on Tuesday on the road with the winner getting either New Trier or Maine South on Friday.

Girls Water Polo: Loyola fell in the quarterfinals of the state tournament to St. Ignatius, 10-6.

Boys Tennis: Loyola finished in second place as a team at the Winnetka Sectional last weekend. Chris Kane and Jack Weisenberger combined for a third-place finish in doubles while Lawson Barter took fourth place in singles to also qualify for the state championships, which star this Thursday.

Loyola ended their dual season with a 6-1 victory over Niles West on May 17. Barter and Anthony Arocho won in their singles matches while Loyola swept the four doubles matches.
