Photo Gallery: Opening Day at Roemer Park

After giving historic Roemer Park a face lift in the winter months, Wilmette's little league baseball teams started its spring league.

Saturday marked a particularly special opening day for Wilmette's historic Roemer Park. After nearly 60 years of little league games, the park underwent renovations in 2010 that included improved dugouts, concessions and fences. Local kids tested out the improved facilities as they kicked off the season.

"We started this process two or three years ago to think about restoring the park," Wilmette Baseball Association Commissioner Sid Tepps. "The park was getting old and tired, the wood was rotting, things were falling down."

The league put together a plan and set out to raise $600,000. They primarily sold commemorative bricks and plaques that would be placed around Roemer Park and have raised $400,000 so far.

Tepps hopes that the park will remain for another 50-plus years of little league baseball.

"Everybody that's played here remembers playing here," Tepps said. "It's a bond. It's an incredible thing through generations."
