Rambler Boys Roundup: Golf Takes Third Place at State Championships

Football improved to 8-0 while cross country won the conference title.

Football: Loyola improved to 8-0 on the season with a . Although Loyola struggled on offense, the Rambler defense picked up the slack, recording seven sacks and only allowing two field goals. Brother Rice’s only touchdown came on a kickoff return for a touchdown from Martez Walker.

QB Malcolm Weaver was knocked out of the game in the third quarter after scrambling for a first down. The senior quarterback was hit hard in the helmet and junior Peter Pujals came in to replace Weaver.

The win sets up a showdown against St. Rita for the Chicago Catholic Blue conference championship on Saturday.

Cross Country: The Ramblers, ranked No. 19 in the state, won the Chicago Catholic League championship on Saturday. Todd Ford won the individual title and was given the Lawless Award for the top senior in the Chicago Catholic League.

William Hague took third while junior Chris Kelly took sixth. Also scoring for Loyola were Sean Lamble (11th) and Teddy Brombach (14th).

It marks the 19th time in school history that Loyola has captured the conference title. The freshman and sophomore teams also won their team championships.

Loyola will start its playoff run with the Wilmette Regional championships on Oct. 22.

Golf: Loyola took third at last weekend’s state championship, 14 strokes behind champion Lake Forest and five shots off of runner-up Lyons. It is the Ramblers’ best finish at the state tournament since winning the title in 2001.

Junior Colin O’Neill was the Ramblers’ best overall finisher at 155 (79-76), tying for ninth place overall. Sophomore Michael Abrahamson came in at 158 (77-81), finishing in a tie for 21st place.

Junior Creighton Helms tied O’Neill’s low round with a 76 on Saturday while senior Tom Kennedy shot 77 in the first round to score for Loyola on Friday.

Soccer: The Ramblers start the postseason on Oct. 18 with a matchup against Lane at Leyden High School. Loyola is seeded No. 7 in the Class 3A Evanston Sectional.
