Rambler Girls Roundup: Condon Paces Volleyball Team

Cross-country underclassmen show promise in placing among top 3 in recent race.

Many high school athletes look toward their senior year as the pinnacle of their sports career. Many Loyola athletes have to wait until then to move to the forefront of any Rambler team while a select few have the talent to see playing time as underclassmen.

In her third year on the Ramblers’ varsity volleyball team, Esme Condon is not only reaping the benefits of two previous seasons on varsity, but also her team.

Condon, the team’s setter and play caller, has led Loyola to a 9-3 record so far this season, with wins over Queen of Peace, DeLaSalle and Glenbrook North within the past two weeks.

“Esme Condon continues to lead her teammates with above average performances versus DeLaSalle and Queen of Peace,” Loyola head coach Jenny Morris wrote Patch via email. “She had 36 assists in each match [each match went just two sets], and was a strong presence with her offensive calls.”

All three of the wins went only two sets. That speaks to the maturity of the Morris’ squad and its stellar execution.

Golf

The Rambler golfers have had a nice wins in dual meets over the past week. The Ramblers shot 156 to York’s 195 at Sugar Creek on Sept. 6 and 164 to Glenbrook North’s 179 on Sept. 8 at Sportsman’s Golf Course.

In the St. Viator Invitational at Deerfield Golf Course on Sept. 10, the Ramblers notched a second-place team finish with a 322. Highland Park topped the 11-team field with a team score of 315.

Loyola’s Isabelle Kane took second place at the St. Viator Invitational with a 74. After shooting a 39 on the front nine, Kane closed with a 35 on the back nine.

Cross-Country

The Ramblers placed four runners in the top seven of the Ron Campbell 2-mile run at Niles West High School, showing they aren’t just a team to contend with this season, but in the future as well.

Sophomore Jackie McDonnell won the event with a time of 12 minutes, 22 seconds. Junior Maddy Fassett took third with a time of 12:41.
