Rambler Girls Roundup: Golf Team Finishes Fifth at State Championships

Cross Country advanced to the sectional meet as a team, while volleyball begins its postseason run.

Cross Country: finished fourth at the Class 3A Wilmette Regional, advancing as a team to the sectional championships this weekend. The Ramblers finished with 98 team points, placing behind champion (34), (59) and (72).

Sophomore Jackie McDonnell led the way for the Ramblers with a 12th place finish in 19 minutes, 10 seconds. Loyola featured a seven-person lineup that had no seniors. Juniors Madeline Durso (20:03) and Amanda Bombard (20:10) came in back-to-back at 19th and 20th while freshman Claire Monticello (22nd, 20:18) and sophomore Caroline Hague (25th, 20:23) also scored for Loyola.

Loyola will compete at the Skokie Sectional on Saturday with a chance to go to the state championships.

Tennis: Both of Loyola’s doubles teams earned a victory at the state championships last week, advancing to the second round before falling out of the championship bracket.

Jennie Gault and Nora Hughes won 6-3, 6-3 in the first round over Stagg before falling 6-4, 6-2 to a team from Crystal Lake South. Meredith Abrahamson and Hannah Post beat a doubles team from Danville 6-2, 6-2 in the first round, but fell in a tough three-set match 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to York’s Torrie Graham and Gabby Riek.

Singles player Devon Hubbard lost 6-0, 6-3 in the first round to Lincoln Park’s Sara Kohtz

The state tournament’s usual back draw was canceled because of weather issues on Thursday.

Golf: Loyola ended its season with a fifth-place finish at the state tournament hosted by Hickory Point Golf Club in Decatur. Loyola combined to shoot +95 over the two-day tournament, 28 shots behind state champion Prospect (+67).

The Ramblers were led by sophomore Isabelle Kane, who was +18 for the tournament and finished in a tie for 15th place. Senior Caroline Newell finished her high school career by shooting +22 and ended up in a tie for 33rd place as an individual.

Volleyball: Kaitlin Mohr, Anna Pontarelli and Esme Condon were named Girls Catholic Athletic Conference All-Conference players for the Ramblers, who finished third in the conference.

Loyola will start the postseason against Lincoln Park on Oct. 25 at Niles West. The Ramblers are seeded No. 4 in the Class 4A Glenview Sectional. New Trier is the No. 1 seed.
