Trevian Boys Roundup: Cross-Country Tweaks Program for Future Success
Football wins its second straight game while soccer drops a couple of games to league foes.
CROSS-COUNTRY - New Trier cross-country coach Dave Wisner is making some changes this year. They aren’t drastic alterations that come after disappointing seasons or repeated failure--after all, the Trevians took seventh at last year’s state championships. Rather they are minor tweaks that Wisner thinks can give New Trier one of its best showings in school history.
Typically cross-country teams focus on building a base early in the season, putting in lots of distance runs. As the season moves closer, the mileage drops and the emphasis in practice is more about speed and repeats.
Wisner will stick to that plan, but move back the speed sessions even further. He’ll switch over to that in early October when only a handful of races remain in the season.

“It’s always worked, but I think we’ve done it a little too early in the past. So I think we’re going to do it a little later,” Wisner said. “We just haven’t done a lot of speed work or pace work; it’s all been about building miles and doing tempo runs.”
Even without some early season speed work, Wisner has been very pleased with how his team has performed so far. Senior Leland Later broke the school record for three miles, running the distance in 14 minutes, 23 seconds last weekend to take second place at the Woodruff Invite.

“Leland’s a got a great chance of winning the state championship with six or seven runners,” Wisner said. “It’s so wide open. He’s got a great shot.”
Wisner knows Later will be at the front of the pack, but whether or not New Trier gets that coveted trophy will depend on the rest of the varsity squad. Sophomore Peter Cotsirilos is dealing with a potentially serious injury, which could test the depth of New Trier’s team. Runners including Dom Gattuso will have to fill in the void.
“Our goal is to get to a trophy this year--top three,” Wisner said. “We haven’t done that in 50 years.”
FOOTBALL - New Trier got a decisive 37-13 victory over Highland Park last Friday night. Jack Nykaza played well as the Trevians won their second straight game after dropping the season-opener.
New Trier moved up one spot to No. 4 in .
GOLF - New Trier beat Evanston 149-164 in its only dual meet last week. George Voris took home medalist honors by shooting a 35.
