Trevian Boys Roundup: Distance Squad Carries Boys Track

Baseball got a couple of solid victories while volleyball had another undefeated week.

Track: Some things change and some things stay the same for New Trier’s boys track team. Mark Wukas has taken over as head coach, replacing Jim Casey, but the Trevians still rely heavily on their distance runners.

“Some of the squads have been inconsistent in their performance,” Wukas said. “The distance squad is our perennial strength and true to form. We have four potential guys going to state from them.”

That strength was shown at the Spartan Relays where New Trier captured the 4x1600 and 4x800 relays for its only event victories.

Among the strong group of distance runners is senior Tommy King and junior Leland Later, who are both expected to advance to the state championships in the 1600 and 800. In the two-mile, Wukas says Isa Qasim and Scott Nystuein should qualify after sectionals.

But to better compete as a team, the sprinters, jumpers and throwers will need to develop. While there have been some bright spots in the sprinters, the group, as a whole, has been injury-plagued.

“We are a team that is still growing and one of these days we’ll get it together, but right now we’re having a tough year,” Wukas said.

Baseball: With six games in eight days, New Trier (13-6) had a chance to prove itself as a sectional championship contender last week.

The Trevians swept a double-header from Waukegan on April 25, taking the first game, 18-8, and the second game, 5-2. Eric West, went 4-for-4 with a home run and six RBIs in game one.

West’s offensive heroics would continue in the Trevian’s matchup against Glenbrook South with a three-run homer and two-run double to pace New Trier in an 8-2 win.

But the Trevians would lose their next two games: a 5-2 decision to Glenbrook South the following day and an eight-inning 2-1 loss to Glenbrook North on Saturday.

New Trier responded with an 18-0 victory over Maine East in five innings on Monday. Jordan Chudacoff allowed just one hit and struck nine to get the victory.

Volleyball: The Trevians (20-4, 4-0 CSL South) swept a pair of CSL South games last week, defeating Maine South and Evanston. Joe Coyne had 15 digs and Andrew Gates recorded eight kills in the Trevians’ April 26 victory against Maine South in two games. Eric Kerr contributed 17 assists and seven digs for New Trier in a 25-13, 25-14 victory over Evanston on April 28.

Tennis: New Trier beat out 31 teams in the Tom Pitchford Invitational hosted by Hersey High School last weekend. No. 1 singles player and defending state champion Robert Stineman won the singles championship.
