Trevian Boys Roundup: Tennis Takes First Step to State Title

All of New Trier's spring sports are preparing for deep postseason runs.

Tennis: New Trier took the first step towards defending its 2010 state championship by advancing all four of its entries into next weekend’s state finals.

Defending singles state champion Robert Stineman took first place at the IHSA Winnetka Sectional, defeating teammate Jared Hiltzik in the finals 6-4, 6-4.

The Trevians also finished 1-2 in the doubles as Drew Campbell and Thomas Fawcett defeated Nate Jacobson and Rob Jacobson 6-1, 6-1 in the championship.

Last year, Stineman didn’t drop a set in the state tournament. Jared Hiltzik combined with Calvin Mang to take third place in doubles while the Jacobson brothers went 5-2, getting to the sixth round of the consolation bracket.

Baseball: The Trevians completed their regular season with a 3-1 week to finish the season at 22-10. New Trier won back-to-back games against Evanston – 9-8 and 2-0 respectively – before blowing out Deerfield and falling to Mount Carmel.

Josh Perlmutter was 4-for-5 with a three-run homer and four RBIs in New Trier’s first win against Evanston while Brian Kost pitched five solid innings to get the win for New Trier two days later.

Campbell Lipe and Kevin Samuelson each went 2-for-2 at the plate with a home run and two RBIs in New Trier’s 18-6 victory against Deerfield.

New Trier, the No. 4 seed in the IHSA Class 3A Glenview Sectional, will start its postseason run on Wednesday against either Prosser or Lane.

Volleyball: If spoiling Glenbrook South’s Senior Night wasn’t enough, the Trevians clinched the outright conference championship last week. Joe Coyne had 11 digs and Bennett Wakenight contributed seven kills and two blocks in the win.

The title-clinching victory came only two days after New Trier edged Evanston in a three-game match. After winning the first game 25-17, the Wildkits rallied to take the second game 25-23. But New Trier had just enough to squeak by 25-23 in the third. Andrew Gates had 17 kills and Eric Kerr dished out 27 assists for New Trier.

Because of its excellent regular season, New Trier received the No. 1 seed in the IHSA Skokie Sectional. The Trevians will begin postseason play on Tuesday night, facing either Rickover Naval Academy or St. Benedict.

Track and Field: The Trevians had  to next week’s state championships. Senior Tommy King led the way with a victory in the 1600 while junior Leland Later finished second.

Lacrosse: New Trier ended its regular season with two more games against out-of-state foes last weekend. The Trevians lost 9-8 to Culver Academy (IN), but rebounded to beat Western Reserve Academy (OH), 12-4 on Sunday. New Trier also defeated Stevenson, 8-1, on the road earlier in the week.

New Trier is the No. 2 seed – behind Loyola Academy – in the Illinois High School Lacrosse Association State Championship Playoff Bracket. They will begin play against either Hinsdale Central or Wheaton North on Thursday at home.
