Trevian Boys Roundup: Tennis Wins 2nd Consecutive State Title

Volleyball got a big win against Glenbrook South while track and field had two athletes earn all-state honors.

Tennis: As predicted by many to the start season, New Trier defended its state championship in dominant fashion. The Trevians earned 55 points, easily outpacing Deerfield (36 points) as all four of their entries finished in the top five.

Senior Robert Stineman defeated teammate Jared Hiltzik 6-2, 6-2 in the finals of the single championships while the doubles team of Drew Campbell and Thomas Fawcett were runner-ups in doubles. Stineman and Hiltzik were the top two seeds in the singles draw and made them stand up.

Stineman completed an undefeated season and will compete for Stanford’s tennis team next year. He became the first back-to-back state champion since Deerfield’s Mike Morrison in 1986. The New Trier senior did not lose a set in his seven matches during the state tournament.

Nate and Rob Jacobson combined to win the consolation finals 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 over Oak Park’s Eric Bruynseels and Tim McAdam. The Jacobson brothers lost in the fourth round, but rallied to win their last five matches in the consolation bracket, garnering fifth place.

Baseball: The Trevians started their postseason play with a 2-1 win over Lane tech in the regional semifinals. John Cook went the distance for the win, allowing just three hits while striking out eight batters.

After a number of weather delays and postponements, New Trier finally faced off against Niles West in the regional final on Tuesday, beating the Wolves, 13-3, at home.

Volleyball: New Trier’s quest to prove itself as one of the state’s best teams started off smooth in the regional championships with two-game wins against Rickover and Loyola. Bennett Wakenight had four blocks and four kills while Eric Kerr dished out 18 assists in New Trier’s 25-19, 25-15 victory over the Ramblers.

New Trier exacted some revenge on CSL South rival Glenbrook South in the sectional semifinals, beating the Titans 25-15, 25-12. Glenbrook South beat New Trier in the regional finals last season.

Track and Field: New Trier showed off its distance-running abilities at the state meet, placing four runners in the top 25.

Senior Tommy King (4:14.08) and junior Leland Later (4:14.30) finished third and fourth in the 1600 finals to take home all-state honors. Senior Scott Nystuen (9:34.71) finished in 18th place in the 3200 finals while senior Isa Qasim (9:39.7) came in 23rd.

The 4x800 relay team of Eric Underwood, Peter Cotsirilos, Chip Schaff and Michael Quirke ran 8:11.61, but didn’t qualify for the finals. Senior Brian Snyder ran 50.00 in the 400 to take sixth in his heat.

Lacrosse: New Trier started its playoff run to a seventh straight championship with a 20-5 shellacking of Hinsdale Central last Thursday. The Trevians are the No. 2 seed in the Illinois High School Lacrosse Association State Championship, behind only Loyola Academy.
