Trevian Boys Roundup: Water Polo Takes Home Conference Crown

Baseball keeps its conference title hopes alive while volleyball continues to battle with top competition.

Water Polo: New Trier is hoping history is the best predictor of future results. In what was essentially a preview for this week’s IHSA Northbrook Sectional, New Trier won the CSL Tournament Championship with an 11-8 win over Glenbrook South.

The Trevians defeated Niles West, 19-5, and Evanston, 12-10, to get to the championship game.

“We were losing [against Evanston] by four goals in the first quarter,” New Trier coach David Goodspeed said. “That’s only the second time this entire season we’ve come back being down more than one and won the game. That was a good thing, we didn’t really panic.”

New Trier rebounded with a stellar defensive effort against Glenbrook South. They got shots on a vast majority of their possessions and rarely turned the ball over.

Goodspeed has been impressed with the play of sophomores Jordan Palmer, Joey Ryan and Jason Bartha, none of who played much at the varsity level last season. The trio combined to score 20 goals in the tournament.

“I’ve been coaching high school water polo for 30 years of coaching and I’ve never had three sophomores who are starting lineup capable, who are really contributing,” Goodspeed said.

Now New Trier turns its attention to the sectional championships, trying to finally return to the state finals after a long drought.

The Trevians will take on the winner of Niles West – Maine West in the first round on Thursday at Glenbrook North.

“We’ve been second in the sectional for about five years in a row,” Goodspeed said. “It’s been pretty frustrating.”

Baseball: The Trevians (16-7, 8-3 CSL) continued to battle for a CSL South title with three conference victories last week. New Trier went 3-1 in the last week with its only loss coming to Stevenson, 4-0, on May 4.

The Trevians defeated Niles West twice in the span of three days as their offense scored a combined 19 runs in the two contests. Nick Hedge gave up five hits and struck out eight in six innings of work in New Trier’s 9-5 victory over the Wolves on May 3.

Hedge was also the winning pitcher in New Trier’s 11-0 win against Highland Park on May 7. Eric West went 2-for-3 at the plate with a three-run home run and five RBIs.

Volleyball: All season New Trier has challenged itself against top competition from around the state, and they are inching closer . The Trevians took third place at the Lincoln Way East Invitational last weekend after losing to Sandburg in the semi-finals 25-21, 25-18. New Trier defeated Naperville North 25-14, 23-25, 15-8 in the consolation match.

Before the tournament, New Trier swept a pair of CSL South games, defeating Glenbrook South and Niles West, both in two games.

Track and Field: New Trier took fourth place at the John Davis Titan Invitational at Glenbrook South on Friday. Tommy King won the 800 in 1:56.3 and helped pace the Trevians’ 4x800 relay team that won in a time of 8:10.0.

Tennis: Despite not having its full squad, New Trier (60 poitns) edged Deerfield (49) in an eight-team field to win the Deerfield Invitational. Jared Hiltzik won the No. 1 singles for the Trevians.
