Trevian Girls Roundup: Badminton Takes Home Tournament Title

Lacrosse continues to put up dominating results while soccer suffered its first loss of the season.

Lacrosse: More than their 10-0 record or six victories by double-digit margins, New Trier coach Peter Collins can tell his team is on the right track by the way they practice each and every day.

After losing to Loyola in last year’s state championship game, the Trevians have come out with a vengeance in 2011, defeating teams from four different states and not allowing a team to score more than nine goals in a game.

“Our players come to practice with a lot of enthusiasm, focus and a desire to get better,” Collins said. “They love to compete. We were excited about our younger players getting the chance to prove themselves.”

One of those players is sophomore Katy Weeks, who Collins says has tons of potential to play defense and midfield. While seniors Maggie Campbell and Janie Gion, who recently set two school records for single-game assists and points, have led New Trier early on, Collins is looking for some first-year starters to get more comfortable within the offense.

New Trier will get another crack at Loyola on May 4 before the state playoffs, but still have a couple conference matchups and a three-game trip to Ohio on the schedule as well.

The Trevians have beaten each of their ten opponents by no fewer than five goals, but Collins still wants his team to be more patient on offense and communicate more on the defensive end.

“We know what it takes to win a state championship, and that is a lot of desire, making good decisions, playing as a cohesive team and shaking off mistakes,” Collins said. “Loyola is a solid team and has tons of speed and talent; we are going to need to elevate our level and be playing at our best in the playoffs to be state champs.”

Badminton: The Trevians continue to answer every challenge that has confronted them this season. After a pair of 18-0 sweeps against Evanston and Maine East, New Trier won its own Featherfest tournament, consisting of 16 teams, for the second straight season.

With 53 points, New Trier easily outpaced Andrew (38), Downers Grove South (38), Hinsdale South (29) and Palatine (23), who rounded out the top five.

Senior Mari Georgiadis won the tournament title in first singles while teammate Jill Burnstine claimed first place in third singles. Claire Hindsley and Vicki Ho also went 6-0 during the tournament to win the second doubles crown.

Soccer: New Trier suffered its first loss of the season when it fell to Lyons Township, 2-0, in the quarterfinals of the Pepsi Showdown on April 14. Goalie Laura Martorana had four saves for the Trevians.

New Trier played No. 5 Huntley to a 1-1 tie two days later.

Softball: Brigit Ieuter struck out five batters in New Trier’s (5-6, 2-0 CSL South) 12-2 victory over Maine South on April 14. Molly Morrison had a double and three runs scored.
