Trevian Girls Roundup: Soccer, Lacrosse Off to Dominating Starts

Water polo is still looking for its hard work to pay off with big wins and softball battles some early-season struggles.

Girls Water Polo: Coach Matt Wendt knows his team’s improvement this season is there. He sees it every day in practice and the Trevians’ have easily handled the opponents that are clearly overmatched.

But the hardest leap to take is from good to great, and New Trier (9-7-1) is still not quite over the hump.

“It has been a great year so far with much improvement, however it is not being reflected in our win-loss record.”

Playing through a tough non-conference schedule, New Trier has faced several top-15 opponents. Against No. 7 Loyola, the Trevian lost 10-9 in overtime on March 18 and tied the Ramblers, 7-7, on April 9. In their second game of the season, New Trier lost again by one goal, 11-10, to No. 12 Sandburg.

So far senior Anna Horstkotte is the leading scorer for the Trevians while senior Katie Flynn and junior Isabelle Baneux anchor the defense.

Although New Trier lost its most recent match to Evanston, Wendt expects the improvement to continue and the results to eventually come.

“We will look to pull it all together in the second-half of the season and have a great effort at CSL championship and Sectionals,” Wendt said.

Softball: It’s been an up-and-down and overall rough start to the season for New Trier’s softball team. The Trevians (4-6, 1-0 CSL South) were swept by Marist and Normal in a pair of non-conference double-headers while also losing their opening match to No. 3 Lincoln-Way East.

But there have been a couple of bright spots for the Trevians, specifically the pitching of junior Brigit Ieuter. The junior standout dominated Maine West for a 1-0 victory on April 7 and allowed only one hit while striking out 14 batters in New Trier’s 11-0 win against Evanston. Chelsea Delaney hit a three-run home run for New Trier to pace the offense against the Wildkits.

Soccer: The No. 2 Trevians (8-0-2) remained undefeated on the season by completing a perfect week. Aside from a pair of 1-0 victories over Plainfield Central on April 7 and Maine West on Tuesday, the Trevians had a comeback victory against Elk Grove in the Pepsi Showdown last Saturday.

New Trier was faced with their first deficit of the year, but freshman forward Maddie Mulford led the Trevian rally with the team’s two goals. New Trier would win in double overtime.

The Trevians will complete their play in the Pepsi Showdown this week.

Lacrosse: After finishing as state runner-ups last season, New Trier has set out to prove that they can get over the hump in 2011. In a battle with last year’s fourth-place state finisher, New Trier fought its way to a 15-8 victory over Montini on April 5. Sophomore midfielder Erin Steiner had four goals to lead the Trevians and Janie Gion contributed three assists.

In their most recent outing, New Trier dominated Deerfield for an 18-0 victory over Deerfield on Tuesday.

Badminton: The Trevians have been typically dominant this season. Blowout victories, including an 18-0 win over Waukegan on Tuesday come often. But the girls badminton team received its first scare of the season on April 6, barely escaping with a win over Glenbrook South, 11-7.
