Trevian Girls Roundup: Softball Continues Winning Ways

Badminton took down another CSL opponent while girls soccer tacked on another 2 wins.

Softball: Confidence is contagious, and New Trier seems to be catching it at the right time.

After a sub-par spring break trip to Normal, IL, New Trier (7-6, 4-0 CSL South) finds itself as the conference leader. Last Thursday,  on the road for its fifth consecutive victory, giving the team a one-game lead over the Titans in the Central Suburban League (CSL) South conference.

“Where we are now versus where we were when we left Normal, IL, this team has really come together,” said coach John Cadwell, whose team started off 0-4.

Everything has been clicking for the Trevians in their five-game winning streak. The offense has come alive, scoring 47 runs in those five games, and the pitching staff has settled in.

The development of junior pitcher Brigit Ieuter is one of the big reasons why the Trevians are looking to win back-to-back conference and sectional championships.

“Brigit has grown so much as a pitcher. She is showing such composure,” Cadwell said. “Where she was last year and where she is this year, there’s a world of difference.”

New Trier still faces a number of challenges left on its schedule, including a double-header against Oak Park and another date with Glenbrook South in early May that will likely determine the winner of the CSL South.

But Cadwell likes what he has seen from his team at the plate and hopes it continues through the rest of the season.

“The girls are going up there with more confidence; they’re seeing the ball nicely and putting the ball in play,” Cadwell said. “They’re making the most of the hits that they get.”

Track and Field: The girls track team took fifth place out of 16 teams at the Lake Park Classic on April 23. Weather hasn’t given the team a lot of opportunities after a record-breaking CSL Invitational indoor meet in March. Courtney Ackerman broke the school indoor record in the 1,600-meter (5 minutes, 6.60 seconds) and Jessica Ackerman set a new school mark in the 3,200-meter (11:06.20).

Badminton: New Trier continues to roll through the CSL with another impressive victory (16-2), this one coming against Maine West on April 21.

Mari Georgiadis dominated at first singles with a 21-5, 21-2 win and Dora Saclarides and Nikki Vanderpal combined for a 21-11, 21-15 victory in first doubles.

Soccer: The Trevians won a pair of games in the Wheaton North Invitational last week. New Trier beat St. Charles East 2-0 on Saturday, following a 2-1 victory in penalty kicks against Wheaton North two days earlier.

The Chicago Tribune bumped up the Trevians in this week’s soccer rankings to No. 6 after being ranked No. 8 last week.
