Trevian Girls Roundup: Softball, Water Polo Win League Championships

Water Polo starts off the playoffs with a win while track and field prepares for the sectional championships.

Softball: New Trier (16-6, 9-0 CSL South) completed an impressive regular-season rally on Monday, clinching the Central Suburban League title with a 3-1 victory over Glenbrook South. It was the Trevians’ second win against Glenbrook South this season as they remained undefeated in league play.

Brigit Ieuter allowed only a single hit and struck out six batters to get the win. Jackie Stern provided much of the offense, scoring two runs and driving in the game-winner with an RBI triple in the fifth inning.

After a dismal start to the season, it looked like 2011 would be a rebuilding year for New Trier. But the Trevians are now the CSL South champions and the favorite to make it out of the IHSA Class 4A Winnetka Sectional.

New Trier defeated Niles West, 11-0, on May 5 to set up its conference clincher. Chelsea Delaney had a grand slam and Ryan Lee smashed a three-run homer to lead New Trier’s offense.

Water Polo: New Trier (16-10, 6-1 CSL) wasn’t the favorite going into the CSL tournament last weekend, but with a little help and some solid play, the Trevians came away as league champions.

Regular-season champion and No. 1 seed Evanston was disqualified from the tournament because of overscheduling and New Trier took advantage. The Trevians defeated Glenbrook North, 11-6, in the finals for the postseason crown.

The Trevians defeated Deerfield / Highland Park in the semi-finals, 16-3.

New Trier, the No. 3 seed in the IHSA Northbrook Sectional, cruised past Glenbrook South, 14-5, in the sectional quarterfinals on Wednesday. The Trevians advance to play Evanston in the semi-finals on Friday night with a likely matchup against Loyola if they advance to the championship round.

Track and Field: Without one of their key long-distance runners, the defending champion Trevians placed fourth at the CSL South outdoor meet last week.

Sophomore Jessica Ackerman cruised to a win in the 1600 with a winning time of 5:02. New Trier won the 4x400 relay in 4:05.17 with Jillian Murray, Ellie Pearlman, Dana Lewis and Stephanie Wynn passing the baton.

New Trier’s 4x800 relay (9:31) also captured first place as Julie Jackson, Ellie Pearlman, Anna Berglund and Sam Wade took the win.

Courtney Ackerman did not compete in the meet.

The Trevians will compete in the IHSA Class 3A Wilmette Sectional on Thursday.
