Trevians Boys Roundup: Tennis Team Trumps Stevenson

Boys volleyball has met early expectations while boys water polo showed its offensive capabilities last week.

Boys Volleyball: High expectations can often be a burden for sports teams with dreams of success. But through the first half of the regular season, New Trier has met almost every challenge they’ve faced.

“We expected to be a confident, consistent and talented team this season and that is exactly what this group has demonstrated over the last five weeks,” coach Sue Ellen Haak said.

Last weekend, the Trevians took home the championship in the Warren Tournament, defeating CSL foe Deerfield in the championship by a score of 25-18, 25-17.

Earlier this season, New Trier finished fourth out of 24 teams at the Wheaton-Warrenvile South Tournament. The Trevians defeated Moeller (Ohio), Stagg and Buffalo Grove before losing to No. 1 Sandburg in the semi-finals and No. 3 Lincoln-Way East in the third-place match. Middle hitter Bennett Wakenight was named to the all-tournament team.

“We are loaded with volleyball players with great all-around skills,” Haak said. “We just make fewer errors than most high school teams and we don’t really have a glaring weakness.”

Still, the ultimate goal for this team is a postseason run and a conference championship, something that has eluded the Trevians for the past two seasons.

“This squad has what it takes to win a conference championship,” Haak said. “We plan to ‘do work’ all season long to make that happen.”

Baseball: After losing a tough game to Notre Dame to start last week, the Trevians (5-3) rebounded to win three straight games over Fremd, Loyola and Benet Academy.

Illinois recruit Brian Kost pitched six innings against Loyola to get the victory and senior Eric West was 4-for-4 with two RBIs in New Trier’s 9-7 victory over Fremd. John Cook (2-1) pitched a complete game against Benet, striking out eight batters on Saturday.

Water Polo: In their two matches last week, the Trevians’ offense opened the flood gates. New Trier (6-5, 5-0 CSL) combined to scre 35 goals in victories over Highland Park / Deerfield and Maine South.

Against Maine South, the Trevians got out fast, outscoring the Hawks 7-0 in the first quarter and led 12-1 at the half.

Konrad VonMoltke starred for New Trier in both games, scoring four goals against Maine South and adding 10 more in the victory over Highland Park / Deerfield.

Boys Tennis: The Trevians had a big week, defeating area-ranked Stevenson and last year’s state runner-up Hinsdale Central. New Trier topped Stevenson, 9-1, sweeping the singles matches and losing only at No. 1 doubles.

In the Benet / Downers Grove South Tournament on Saturday, New Trier defeated Hinsdale Central, 4-1.

Lacrosse: New Trier beat previously undefeated Glenbrook North in its CSL opener, 12-4. Playing without all-time leading scorer Chad Sawyer, senior midfielder Mick Parks picked up the offensive slack. Parks scored five first-half goals and the defense smothered Glenbrook North’s attack.

On Friday afternoon, the Trevians took down Brother Rice, a well-known lacrosse program from Michigan, 12-7.
