North Shore Girls Hope to Raise $30K for Malawian Girls

Two New Trier High School students are helping to fundraise and raise awareness of the needs of girls in Malawi and around the world.

A group of 50 girls basketball players from Full Package Athletics, a sports club on the North Shore, is partnering with Girl Up, a campaign of the United Nations Foundation, with the hope of raising $30,000 to benefit young girls in Malawi, Wilmette Life reported.

In June, Liz Satter of Glencoe and Becca Napoli of Wilmette, who are both New Trier High School students, spent two hours outside the Grand Food Center in Winnetka to spread awareness of the situation in Malawi where less than 25 percent of girls are able to finish elementary school, the newspaper reported.

Only 40 percent of Malawi's population has access to safe water and some girls spend up to 15 hours daily hauling water for their families, according to the organization's website.
