Supporters and Opponents Gear Up for Next Walmart Meeting

The Northbrook Plan Commission meets Wednesday to hear more public input on the proposed store.

Those strongly in favor of a Walmart in Northbrook and those outraged by the idea are both gearing up for the next public meeting on the topic, to be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Glenbrook North High School.

Walmart itself is rallying supporters through a number of ways. Its “Walmart Northbrook” website, with the slogan, “Helping Northbrook Save Money and Live Better,” provides a link for community members to speak at the Plan Commission meeting.

According to an article in the Northbrook Star, phone bank calls and mailings are also going out to people likely to support the project, proposed for 1000 Skokie Blvd. The article states that small meetings are being organized around town for those who support the project to come together without fear of intimidation by anti-Walmart residents.

On the other side, the group Northbrook Against Walmart is reminding people on its Facebook page about Wednesday’s meeting. It’s also offering free “No Walmart” lawn signs. Patch readers are also offering yard signs, such as in this post on the site.

Previous meetings have drawn hundreds of attendees and scores of speakers in opposition to the plan. Northbrook's Plan Commission says the public input meetings will continue until everyone who wishes to share their thoughts on the store have spoken.
