Patch Pets: Mic & Muffin

Each week, we feature cats and dogs available for adoption from Heartland Animal Shelter in Northbrook.

Adoption Information - Heartland's cat adoption fee of $100 includes up-to-date vaccinations, spay/neuter, deworming, FIV/Feline Leukemia test and a microchip. Kitten adoption fees are slightly higher and reduced rates are often offered for special needs cats. Heartland Animal Shelter, located at 2975 Milwaukee Avenue in Northbrook, is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 4-7 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-4 p.m.

Athletes from all over Illinois including the north and northwest suburbs will compete in the Illinois High School Association State Track Meet today (Friday) and Saturday at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Results are available here as they unfold. Meanwhile, watch videos of many of the athletes competing at the meet from the immediate area as they took part in either the Niles West or Buffalo Grove Sectional meets May 16.

Comcast Turns on Wi-Fi Hot Spots Throughout Chicago Area

Find out where the internet hot spots are in Wilmette.

Comcast has turned on more than 1,000 wi-fi hotspots throughout the Chicago suburbs. While the hotspots are meant to help Xfinity Wi-Fi customers connect more easily while on the go, the company will be running a promotion that allows anyone to use the hotspots from May 24 through July 4, according to the Chicago Tribune. According to the Comcast website some local wi-fi hotspots include: More hotspot locations can be found by searching the Comcast website.  You can also search for a network on your computer by searching for networks named "xfinitywifi" or "cablewifi," according to the Chicago Tribune.

Bring a Lake Bluff Brew to Your Memorial Day BBQ

A small batch brewery on the North Shore has some options for those of you looking to bring a delicious, local beer to your Memorial Day celebration.

Heading to a Memorial Day barbecue this weekend and looking to bring something more creative than buns or brats? Try some really tasty beer. After finishing an interview last week at Inovasi, I stumbled into Lake Bluff Brewery for the first time. Patch has written about these guys before, but I actually didn't know the place existed until reading about it as the final destination of an awesome day-long bike ride in the Chicago Reader.  It was around 5 p.m. on Friday when I walked in and the place was packed, but not too busy that the friendly bartender couldn't find time to let me sample a few beers. Some NTHS Parents Believe iPads are Too Costly

Some New Trier parents are speaking out against the school's plan to require all students to have an iPad.

New Trier High School's Mobile Learning Initiative will have all students use their own iPad for school by the 2014-15 school year. While some believe this plan will eventually save money for the district in the long run, other parents think that the program is unfair for non-wealthy families, an article by Business Insider states.  “We’re in a wealthy district, but you can’t assume that everyone’s wealthy,” Mary Rita Kropp, a New Trier parent, was quoted in the article. The program pays an average of $620 for the iPad, keyboard, case and applications. Families receive a $270 subsidy, who can then pay $350 for a 16GB version or $450 for a 32GB iPad. Alternatively, families can pay $180 a year for three years in a lease-to-own option or …
