Donating money to organizations that help victims is quick and easy.
Americans across the country are reacting with shock to the devastation caused by a 2-mile wide Tornado in Oklahoma. Dozens have died, and President Obama has declared the path of the tornado a major disaster area. If you would like to help, you can do so from your computer or mobile device right now. Patch will be posting stories of locals who are working to help victims from afar. If you know of someone local was affected by the tornado or who is working to help the victims, please contact your local editor Paula Skaggs: Paula.Skaggs@patch.com

Cocomero started construction on the new Wilmette location on May 3.
Cocomero, a self-serve frozen yogurt store, has begun construction in downtown Wilmette. The store will open at 1163 Wilmette Ave. in the old Chen and Chen location. A Cocomero location opened last fall in Downer's Grove and that location carries around a dozen flavors, ranging from vanilla to peanut butter. Diners can then add some of the 30 offered toppings — including fruits, candy and cereal — to their concoction before weighing their cup and paying for it. The Downer's Grove location also offers bubble tea, smoothies and lattes. There's no word yet if the Wilmette location will offer similar items. This is a developing story. The parade will start at 10:30 a.m. at Lake Avenue and Ridge Road.

Deerfield’s Alex Gold, Highland Park’s Jonah Hanig and Angel Estrada along with New Trier’s Peter Cotsirilos are all in contention.
Deerfield High School distance runner Alex Gold and his Highland Park High School counterpart Jonah Hanig have been friends for a long time and like to help each other out. Though Gold and Hanig will be trying to medal in both the 3,200-meter run and the 1,600 at the State Meet Friday and Saturday at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, look for them to assist each other there too. Earlier: Evanston Take Sectional Track Crown In both races at Thursday’s Sectional Meet in Skokie, Gold and Hanig worked together to pace themselves and teammates in a way to qualify as many Warriors and Giants for the State Finals as possible. “Jonah (Hanig) and I have known each other a long time and we were trying to help each other out,” Gold said. “We…
Katie Chang, who studied at the Actor’s Training Center at the Wilmette Theater, plays a party girl in the movie The Bling Ring.
Katie Chang, a New Trier High School senior, plays a party girl in Sofia Coppola’s latest movie The Bling Ring, which opens next month, Chicago Tribune reported. When Chang read a script in December 2011, the actress who studied at the Actor’s Training Center at the Wilmette Theater, had no idea she would end up on the big screen as part of Coppola’s latest movie. “In the audition process, I had no idea what the movie is about,” Chang told Patch in a 2012 interview. “Sofia is known for being very secretive of her projects and keeping all of her projects very sacred until the last minute.” The Winnetka native plays Rebecca in the movie inspired by a group of fame-obsessed teenagers who robbed celebrity homes, including that of Paris …

Twenty-five years ago today, Dann went on a violent spree that left an 8-year-old boy dead, and included arsenic-laced Rice Krispies treats, three pistols, a can of gasoline and a firebomb.
It seems hard to believe that there was a time when the term "school shooting" hadn't entered our vernacular. But 25 years ago, when Laurie Dann did just that at Hubbard Woods school in Winnetka — in addition to attempting to poison, burn and shoot many others in a violent rampage in the North Shore — such episodes were virtually unheard of. Patch asked readers what their memories are of May 20, 1988, when Dann went on a crime spree that included arsenic-laced Rice Krispies treats, three pistols, a can of gasoline and a firebomb. The Glencoe native killed 8-year-old Nicky Corwin and wounded five other children at Hubbard Woods Elementary, and threw a firebomb into Ravinia Elementary School in Highland Park, which fizzled out before …
From being the first Down syndrome student mainstreamed in her school district to starting her own advocacy organization, Bridget Brown's journeys are far and wide. Sponsored by Grape-Nuts.
Living like a movie star for a week, Bridget Brown of Darien had a small part in a movie with Miley Cyrus. Brown also has her own consulting business, works as a dental assistant’s assistant and has many more jobs in life few of us would ever conquer. Having Down syndrome, the 27-year-old woman is considered to be disabled, but you would never know by the full life she leads. Brown was the first person with a disability included in her school district and is a strong advocate of inclusion. Among her dislikes is hearing someone be insulted. "Don’t call people retarded," Brown says. "I got called that, I was angry and wanted to cry.” Another fight Brown goes up against is mothers who want to abort their babies when they find out the baby…
