North Shore Memories of Laurie Dann's Violent Rampage

Twenty-five years ago today, Dann went on a violent spree that left an 8-year-old boy dead, and included arsenic-laced Rice Krispies treats, three pistols, a can of gasoline and a firebomb.

It seems hard to believe that there was a time when the term "school shooting" hadn't entered our vernacular. But 25 years ago, when Laurie Dann did just that at Hubbard Woods school in Winnetka — in addition to attempting to poison, burn and shoot many others in a violent rampage in the North Shore — such episodes were virtually unheard of.  Patch asked readers what their memories are of May 20, 1988, when Dann went on a crime spree that included arsenic-laced Rice Krispies treats, three pistols, a can of gasoline and a firebomb. Catherine...you are correct. Fact: School security was woefully inadequate or non-existent which enabled Dann, et al to enter these schools. I think people find it easier to blame a thing, rather than policy shortcomings created by people for these tragedies.   more ›

Police: 19-Year-Old Arrested for D.U.I.

The following arrest information was provided by the Wilmette Police Department. When an arrest is mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Burglary to Auto A resident on the 1500 block of Wilmette Ave. reported that between May 14 and May 15, and unknown offender(s) entered her unlocked vehicle overnight and went through all of the compartments of the vehicle, police reports state. The only item missing was a pair of Bose in-ear headphones. Theft at the L-Station A resident on the 100 block of Prairie Ave. reported that unknown offender(s) took his mothers locked bike from the bike rack at the Linden L Station at 339 Linden Ave. sometime between May 10 and May 15, police reports state. D.U.I. Kelly Minx, 19, of Glenview is being charged with driving under the influence, Wilmette Police reports state. Minx was pulled over for traffic violations at the intersecton of Lake Ave. …

Des Plaines Battery, Hazing Charges Filed Against Maine West Soccer Coach A former varsity boys soccer coach and teacher at Maine West High School faces multiple criminal charges related to reports of bullying and hazing, Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez stated on Wednesday. Michael Divincenzo was charged with eight misdemeanor counts including three counts of battery, one count of hazing and four counts of failure to report abuse as mandated, in incidents on June 1, 2012, Aug. 31, 2012 and Sept. 26, 2012, according to court documents. Divincenzo is accused of threatening freshmen students to have the varsity players stick their thumbs up their buttocks if they did not communicate properly during a soccer drill, according to the …

The Glencoe native killed an 8-year-old and wounded five other children at Winnetka's Hubbard Woods Elementary, according to the Evanston Review. She threw a firebomb into Ravinia Elementary School, which fizzled out before harming anyone. She shot Philip Andrew in the chest of his home before turning one of her guns on herself and committing suicide, the Evanston Review reports. A suspect has been arrested in Wednesday's hit-and-run accident in Wilmette after being charged with a D.U.I. in Arlington Heights.

A 19-year-old Chicago woman is being charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to aid or give information and improper backing after a hit-and-run accident in Wilmette on Wednesday, Wilmette Police reports state. Jasmine Moore, 19, of Chicago, was involved in a hit-and-run accident in the 3500 block of Lake Ave, police reports state. The incident started as a minor property damage traffic crash at Edens Plaza, between two vehicles, according to police. The victim told police that Moore's car struck her vehicle, and Moore fled the scene. The victim followed Moore's vehicle until Moore eventually stopped in the 3500 block of Lake Ave., where the victim approached her vehicle. Moore …

Diane... That day will be forever etched in my memory as well. At the time I lived mere blocks from the school and Kent Rd., where Laurie committed suicide. A crystal clear and sunny day. A perfect day. When I left for work (in the city) my two young children were playing in the yard. I wished that I could have stayed home with them as I drove off. Wilmette Hit-and-Run Driver Leaves Fender-Bender with Woman Clinging to Vehicle

Wilmette police are looking for a woman involved in a traffic accident on the 3500 block of Lake Avenue Wednesday.

  Wilmette police say they are looking for a woman who apparently took off from a minor accident Wednesday, with another woman clinging to the side of her vehicle, Wilmette Life reported.  Wilmette Police Chief Brian King says the May 15 incident started as a minor traffic accident on the 3500 block of Lake Avenue but when one of the drivers involved approached the other vehicle, the woman behind the wheel drove off with the victim clinging to the side of the car, Wilmette Life reported.  For the full story, visit: Wilmette.Suntimes.com

Police: Suspect Arrested During Car Burglary-in-Progress

Mark Leondorf, a 19-year-old Wilmette resident, was caught burglarizing a Wilmette vehicle on Tuesday.

Mark Leondorf, 19, of Wilmette is in police custody after he admitting to burglarizing a car on the 900 block of Chestnut Ave on Tuesday, Wilmette Police reports state. Wilmette Police apprehended Leondorf around 5:30 p.m. on May 14 after a resident called about a burglary-in-progress. The resident confronted Leondorf when he was inside one of the family's vehicles. Police reports state that he fled the scene but was located by responding officers at the intersection of 9th St. and Forest Ave. He was identified in a show-up and arrested. Police reports state that Leondorf admitted to entering the vehicle and was charged with burglary to auto. He was held by police overnight and attended a bond hearing on Wednesday.
