Distance Runners Seek State Track Medals

Deerfield’s Alex Gold, Highland Park’s Jonah Hanig and Angel Estrada along with New Trier’s Peter Cotsirilos are all in contention.

Deerfield High School distance runner Alex Gold and his Highland Park High School counterpart Jonah Hanig have been friends for a long time and like to help each other out. Though Gold and Hanig will be trying to medal in both the 3,200-meter run and the 1,600 at the State Meet Friday and Saturday at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, look for them to assist each other there too. Athletes from 17 area schools competed for berths in the State Track Meet during the Niles West Sectional Thursday in Skokie. Take a look for your favorite athlete and see who is going to the State Meet Thursday through Saturday at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Evanston Takes Sectional Track Crown

Glenbrook South, New Trier, Deerfield, Highland Park, Niles West, Maine West, Maine South, Notre Dame, Niles North and Loyola athletes will join Wildkits at State Meet.

Taking home the team trophy for the sixth straight year, the Evanston High School boys track team won the Niles West Sectional Thursday in Skokie sending five individuals and three relay teams to the State Meet May 24 and 25 at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston The Wildkits compiled 85 points. Glenbrook South took home second place with 72 followed by Prospect in third with 70 and New Trier fourth with 58. Niles West accumulated 47 for fifth with  Deerfield sixth, Main South seventh, Niles North eighth, Highland Park ninth place, Notre Dame of Niles tenth, Maine West 11th , Loyola Academy 12th, Maine East 13th\, Glenbrook North 14th and Von Steuben 15th. Winnetka ZBA Gives New Trier High School’s ‘Netting System’ Green Light

Winnetka trustees are expected to review the proposal in coming weeks.

  Winnetka Zoning Board of Appeals voted in favor of allowing New Trier High School to put up a 50-foot netting system around a baseball backstop at the northwest corner of Hibbard and Willow roads, Chicago Tribune reported.  Some Winnetka residents raised concerns that the system could be an eyesore--the system extend a total of 160 feet in length, 100 feet of it is parallel to Willow Road and 60 feet of it is behind the home plate. The Village Board is expected to vote on the proposal in coming weeks, Chicago Tribune reported. Related Coverage

'Camp Lady' Finds the Perfect Match

At this time of the year, North Shore residents flock to 'The Camp Lady' to help them find the right summer camp for their kids.

School is almost out. Have you found the right summer camp for your child? For this sometimes trying endeavor, many North Shore residents seek the expertise of "The Camp Lady," Enid Grabiner, of Northbrook, according to a story in Crain's Chicago Business. Grabiner has been matching kids and camps for nearly 30 years, taking meetings in her basement with parents and their children, reports Crain's. Read the full story here. North Shore Country Day Students Recognized for Literary Talent

Three students received the Gold Key recognition, the highest level of achievement at the regional level, in the 2013 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

  Three North Shore Country Day School students were recently recognized for their literary talent and selected for the Gold Key recognition, the highest level of achievement for student artists and writers at the regional level, in the 2013 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, Chicago Tribune reported.  A panel of judges chose the following works to receive a Gold Key: Josh Hoeflich, 16, wrote a persona essay titled Jacob and I about his relationship with his brother; Declan Falls, 16, wrote a short story titled The Lamarckian about 19th-century biologist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck; and Hayun Cho, 18, was recognized for her portifolio submission, which included poetry and personal essays, Chicago Tribune reported.  The Scholastic Art and Writing…

New Trier Boys Water Polo Team Head to State

This is the team’s first trip to the state tournament since 2004.

  New Trier High School’s boys water polo team won against Loyola Academy 11-9 at the sectional final Saturday. The Trevians will head to the state tournament, the first time since 2004, Northbrook Star reported.  New Trier senior Dano Johnson scored all three of his goals in the fourth quarter and helped the Trevians win over the Ramblers, ending an eight-game losing streak in the sectional finals, Northbrook Star reported.  For the full story, visit Northbrook.Suntimes.com

IHSA Sets New Rules for Youth Football Practice

"These guidelines are based on the most recent scientific evidence, as well as the expertise of the coaches who will help implement them," said Dr. Preston M. Wolin, a member of the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee.

The Illinois High School Association approved new safety rules Wednesday to limit tackling in youth football practice in an effort to reduce head injuries, reported the Daily Herald. In March, a controversial bill sponsored by State Rep. Carol Sente (D-Vernon Hills) proposing to limit the number of days players could have full contact hitting practice (twice a week) failed in the House committee. The new IHSA policy calls for coaches to gradually increase the time players can participate in preseason practice, along with the number of protective pads they can wear. On the seventh day of practice, players can participate in five hours of full contact drills wearing full pads, according to the IHSA. However, no single practice can exceed …
