AT&T Cell Tower Proposal Defeated

Wilmette Park District Commissioners voted to end negotiations Monday evening.

Not a hand rose in agreement with the president of the Wilmette Park District's board of commissioners, Dennis O'Malley, when he asked if anyone else wanted to install an antenna in Centennial Park to boost AT&T's cellular network. "Is there anybody in the room who is in support of the tower?" O'Malley asked the room. Silence. The votes were cast: six to nix the plan, one — comissioner Mike Murdock— to keep it on the table. The room erupted into cheers and clapping. The voice of Wilmette had been heard; there would be no AT&T cell tower built near Centennial Ice Rink. If the concerns of the residents and Dr. Hirsch regarding the saftey to children who will be at the pool as much as 120 days a year was really of paramount concern and the reason for the commissioners to reject the AT&T proposal, why then are they not looking at the cell tower at Village Hall? Park District Requests Retraction of AT&T Tower Plan

Executive director, Steve Wilson, told Patch they hope to make the plan more aesthetically pleasing.

The proposed construction of an AT&T cell tower above the Centennial Ice Rink might be delayed, according to Village officials. Instead of being presented before the Wilmette board in February, the project may not be reviewed until March, following requests from the park district Tuesday.  After receiving a negative recommendation from the Zoning Board of Appeals on Jan. 18, when residents-in-attendance also expressed "community character" concerns, the plan was assessed by the park district's financial planning committee Monday night.
