UPDATE: Former SWANCC Exec Accused of Stealing $900K Awaits Trial, Allowed to Leave State

Christopher Brook Beal may leave Iliinois to tend to business in Michigan, Judge Timothy Chambers said May 17.

Bond was modified May 17 in Cook County Circuit Court to allow Christopher Brooke Beal-- the former executive director of the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC)--to leave the state as he awaits trial on charges of embezzling more than $900,000.  The Cook County Grand Jury recently indicted Beal on two charges each of theft of government property, official misconduct and forgery. These Class X felonies carry a prison sentence of six to 30 years, according to Cook County State’s Attorney spokesperson Andy Conklin.  Beal was charged March 10 with stealing more than $900,000 in funds from SWANCC after a five month joint investigation involving the Glenview Police Department and the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Public …

I think it is a waste of tax payer money to lock up white collar criminals. An alternative idea of house arrest, day to day employment scrubbing state hospital toilets and doing other over paid union state jobs would save the tax payers millions!!   more ›

UPDATED: Former Wilmette Officer Accused of Stealing From Defendant

Diane Grassi, 47, allegedly forced a DUI offender to pay a false cash bond.

Updated as of 3:45 p.m. on May 5. Former Wilmette Police Officer Diane Grassi, 47, has been charged with theft and official misconduct after she allegedly tricked a suspect in September into giving her money, saying that it was needed as a cash bond, according to a statement released Thursday from Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez. Grassi turned herself into authorities at the Cook County courthouse at 26th Street and California Avenue in Chicago for a bond hearing Thursday morning, according to the release. Wilmette police had received a personnel complaint on Oct. 3 regarding Grassi., The following day, the department requested that Alvarez’soffice conduct an independent investigation, until Grassi appeared in court today. Christopher Brooke Beal pleaded not guilty today in the Skokie branch of Cook County Circuit Court to a six-count felony indictment related to charges of stealing more than $900,000. An indictment on two counts of theft of government property, forgery and misconduct was announced today in the Skokie Branch of Cook County Circuit Court against Christopher Brooke Beal, 47, the former executive director of the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC).  Beal is charged with a Class X felony, assigned to any theft of more than $100,000 in government property, said Lisa Gordon, a spokesperson with the Cook County State’s Attorney's office. The former executive director of the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook Country (SWANCC)—which manages garbage collection for 23 suburban communities— has been charged with stealing more than $900,000 over a four-year period, Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez announced today. Christopher Brooke Beal, 47, of Chicago, began working with the Glenview-based public agency in 1993. After a Sept. 2010 audit found an “inexplicable increase in employee related expenses,” Beal allegedly forged an email from another SWANCC official approving the expenses, according to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.
