Kirk, Durbin Schneider Tour New School as Sequester Removes Shine

Sen. Kirk and Sen. Durbin make first joint appearance in state at Great Lakes school along with Rep. Schneider.

Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) and Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Springfield) made their first joint public appearance in Illinois since Kirk returned to full time duty in the Senate in January at a Great Lakes charter school they helped create which is now being hurt by the Sequester. Durbin, Kirk and Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) met with students at the Learn Public Charter School, a North Chicago public school on the Great Lakes Naval Base, to see the new institution and listen to the students. “This is our first public appearance in Illinois since Sen. Kirk returned to the Senate (in January after suffering a stroke a year before),” Durbin said. “We wanted it to be here because it is something we worked on together.” Sequester Reduces …

Dold Resurfaces on Facebook

Former Congressman restarts Facebook posts more than three months after loss to Brad Schneider.

What has former Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) been doing since the Nov. 6 election? If his Facebook page is any indication, he returned to a public life in a virtual sense March 15 when he updated his profile photo, asked a question about the country’s future, got 35 likes and 55 comments. His previous post was made Nov. 6. Earlier: Schneider Beats Dold in 10th District Race “What should we be doing to leave our children a better and more prosperous America?” Dold asked his social media followers. Two days later Dold was at it again posting a photo from a 2012 St. Patrick’s Day parade he called one of his favorites asking people how they celebrated the day. On March 20, Dold gave a shout out to Wheeling High School Principal Lazaro Lopez…

North Shore representatives both vote against latest Ryan budget but disagree on Continuing Resolution to fund government through September.

Local members of the Congress voted differently today as the House of Representatives passed a continuing resolution to fund the government through September but stood up together to oppose a Republican drafted budget. Paul Ryan (R-WI) but took a different route on a Senate passed continuing resolution funding the federal government through September. Schakowsky, Schneider Urge Sequester Action

Schneider pleads for cooperation while Schakowsky warns of consequences of pending spending cuts.

With automatic spending cuts totaling $1.2 trillion over the next 10 years set to go into effect Friday, Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) and Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) took to the floor of the House of Representatives Tuesday to urge action. Schakowsky warned of a reduction of military preparedness, less ability for small businesses to find loans, a reduction of food inspectors, less airport security because of layoffs at the Transportation Safety Administration and a drop in money for mental health services. “We’ve all been talking about the need for more mental health services around this whole issue of gun violence and it’s predicted about 373,000 adults and children who need mental health services won’t find them,” Schakowsky …

Freshman Brad Schneider and Veteran Jan Schakowsky come away with different impressions of the same message. Sen. Mark Kirk joins the chorus on gun control.

Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) and Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) saw President Barack Obama’s State of the Union through different eyes but came away with the same message Tuesday. Both north suburban lawmakers praised and ratified the President’s proposals to raise the minimum wage, stimulate job growth, implement gun control and more. They heard the same message but saw it differently. Earlier: Schneider, Schakowsky Give Back to Honor King Schakowsky, a seven-term veteran, was excited by the challenge the President laid at the feet of Congress while Schneider was awed by the full experience of his first State of the Union address on the floor of the House of Representatives.  “It was a pretty incredible experience,” Schneider said…

Before she became a Patch blogger at Monday’s inauguration of President Barack Obama, Deerfield High School sophomore Lily Zacharias’s talent started a bidding war between Republicans and Democrats.

When you catch the political bug in third grade and start attending national leadership conferences in sixth, it should not be a surprise when both sides in one of the of the country’s hottest Congressional campaigns are bidding for your services as a high school freshman. That is what happened to Deerfield High School sophomore Lily Zacharias. Earlier: Patch Blogger Heads to Inauguration Not only were the teams of Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) and former Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) trying to get her aboard, but all of that experience gave her an opportunity to be part of history today as she attends the inauguration of President Barack Obama for a second term. Kirk Climbs 237 Steps Returning to Senate

Highland Park senator comes back to work just under a year after suffering a stroke.

Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) returned to work today as he climbed 237 steps to the entrance of the Senate side of the United States Capitol just under a year after suffering a major stroke. Assisted by Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), Kirk walked slowly using a cane completing the ascent 10 minutes before the Vice President was scheduled to gavel the Senate into session for the 113th Congress. Biden was not worried about the timing. “You’ve got all day, pal,” the vice president said to Kirk at the bottom of the stairs. Biden was the first person to greet Kirk when he appeared at the bottom of the steps, giving him a hug. Next to hug his returning colleague at the bottom of the stairs was Sen. Richard Durbin (D-…
