More Than 200 Skating Student Take To The Ice
The Wilmette Park District and Centennial Ice Rink held their 35th Annual Spring Ice Show this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. More than 200 skating students, all of which take lessons at Centennial, participated in the show, skating in solo and group performances. Skaters of all ages took part, ranging in age from four to twenty-one. This years theme was "Opposites Attract", the show incorporated a lineup of songs with opposite meanings, such as "Forget You" and "Do You Remember" or "Fire Burning" and "Ice Ice Baby". Wilmette Park District Commissioners voted to end negotiations Monday evening.
Not a hand rose in agreement with the president of the Wilmette Park District's board of commissioners, Dennis O'Malley, when he asked if anyone else wanted to install an antenna in Centennial Park to boost AT&T's cellular network. "Is there anybody in the room who is in support of the tower?" O'Malley asked the room. Silence. The votes were cast: six to nix the plan, one — comissioner Mike Murdock— to keep it on the table. The room erupted into cheers and clapping. The voice of Wilmette had been heard; there would be no AT&T cell tower built near Centennial Ice Rink. Tomoki Hiwatashi Age: 11 Main Training Rink: Centennial Ice Rink School: Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, Hoffman Estates Accomplishments/Key to Awesomeness: Tomoki Hiwatashi won every skating competition he entered this past season, which ended in December. Hiwatashi's biggest prize was winning first place in the U.S. Junior Championship figure skating competition in Salt Lake City, Utah. Hiwatashi was 10-years-old when he won the event, and it was his third year competing. Hiwatashi's success stems from an incredible dedication. According to his parents, the 5th-grader wakes up at 5 a.m. daily to skate before school and practices after classes for roughly another two hours. Local figure skaters Tomoki Hiwatashi, 10, and Eric Stinehart, 12, placed in the top 10 for the U.S. Junior Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah last week. Hiwatashi trumped the competition with a 56.22 standing, winning the finals with almost a six-point gap between first and second place. Meanwhile Stinehart earned 46.64 points, missing 7th place by nearly one-fifth of a point. "Eric ended up 8th, but skated his best program ever ... even better than the qualifying rounds." Cydèle Fadeyev, one of the boys' coaches, told Patch in an email interview, "We are very happy that they performed so well and that our two boys ended up in the top 10 at this national championship." Tomoki Hiwatashi, Eric Stinehart hope to place in top three for U.S. junior competition.
Two local figure skaters are heading to Salt Lake City on Tuesday to compete against some of the best skaters in the country. Tomoki Hiwatashi, 10, and Eric Stinehart, 12, are nationally ranked No. 1 and No. 5 in their age group, respectively. The duo hopes to finish in the top three. Stinehart and Hiwatashi practice at the Wilmette Park District's Centennial Ice Rink, under their coaches Alexander Fadeyev, 1985 men's world champion and, his wife, Cydèle Fadeyev. If the concerns of the residents and Dr. Hirsch regarding the saftey to children who will be at the pool as much as 120 days a year was really of paramount concern and the reason for the commissioners to reject the AT&T proposal, why then are they not looking at the cell tower at Village Hall?
