The former Trevian centerfielder gave up a scholarship to the University of Illinois and will start in the Cardinals' minor league system.
Former New Trier centerfielder Charlie Tilson agreed to terms with the St. Louis Cardinals and forego his scholarship at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, according to ESPN Chicago. Tilson and the Cardinals came to an agreement on the final day that players selected in this year's draft could sign with their terms. The deal is reportedly worth $1.275 million. Boys lacrosse won its seventh straight championship while swimming teams were dominant at the state championships.
Here are Patch's top 10 sports moments for New Trier during the past school year. 10. Basketball Teams Sweep Evanston at Northwestern: While both Trevian teams were bounced early in the playoffs, they each won the second of their two annual meetings with CSL South rival Evanston. The boys were led byConnor Boehm in a second-half comeback while the girls welcomed back Abby Schmitt with a decisive victory. 9. Softball Rallies to Win Super-Sectional: Down to its last six outs, New Trier scored two runs in the sixth inning to tie the game, 2-2, on a bases-loaded single by Eileen Hurley. Tilson calls it "a dream come true" to be selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the second round of the Major League Baseball Draft.
Former New Trier standout center fielder Charlie Tilson was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals with the 79th overall pick in the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday. Shortly after learning of his selection, Tilson sat down with Patch to talk about his excitement and the pending contract negotiations that will take place this summer. Tilson has also committed to play for the University of Illinois, and still has the option to do so if he is unable to secure the desired contract from the Cardinals. Charlie Tilson was named Illinois Baseball Player of the Year by Gatorade.
One of New Trier's star athletes received a state-wide honor for his achievements on and off the baseball field. Charlie Tilson, a senior outfielder on the baseball team, was named the Illinois Baseball Player of the Year and is in the running for Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year. Previous honorees include Derek Jeter, Chipper Jones and Derek Lee, among others. Tilson is the first New Trier baseball player to earn the recognition. In school, he has a 3.82 GPA and volunteers to several sports-related organizations. Tilson told Patch earlier this year that he signed a letter of intent to play baseball at the University of Illinois but was meeting with the Boston Red Sox too. I think Ross Baumgartner (pitched for White Sox) was the last NT grad who went on to the majors. He and John Castino Minnesota Twins) were contemporaries in the 1970s. John could have been a hall of famer if not for back problems that ended his playing career. Congrats to Charlie!!!   more ›
