Public Hearings for Metra Fare Hike Tonight

Tonight is your chance to voice your opinion on Metra's vote to raise the price of a 10-ride ticket.

Starting Feb. 1, the price of a Metra 10-ride ticket will increase by 11 percent -- that is, unless the public persuades the rail system otherwise. Tonight, Metra will hold eight public comment meetings across the Chicagoland area to discuss the proposed fare hike, which would raise the price of a 10-ride ticket to the equivalent of 10 individual tickets. In the past, the discounted fare only charged the equivalent of nine rides. Though a measure approving the increase was passed by the Metra board of directors by an 8-2 vote on Nov. 16, the raised fare cannot be adopted until Metra holds meetings for public comment. Folks who ride the Metra regularly may now have to shell out an extra few bucks for every 10th trip. That's because the Metra board of directors voted 8-2 on Nov. 16 to raise the cost of a 10-ride ticket. The new 10-ride ticket would cost the same as 10 individual tickets. In the past, the discounted fare only charged the equivalent of nine rides. The increased fare would go into effect Feb. 1, and 10-Ride tickets purchased Nov. 17 through Jan. 31 would be valid only through Feb. 28, according to the Metra website.
